Hey all, my girlfriend has major depression. She is currently on Zoloft 100mg. It helps her from getting to that very low point but I can tell she is still troubled. We are going to begin regular exercise. I work In a health food shop an I was wondering if anyone had any good supplements that can aid in her recovery. 5-HTP Is obviously out of the question but maybe sAME? Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Meditation has helped me as well as magnesium supplements.

Nothing is as powerful as those fabulous natural endorphines that your body makes.

absolutely fish oil (or some other source of omega-3) if she isn't getting it already. This type of fat is essential for the brain and nervous system to function.

logotherapy may help, making her stop taking antidepressants should be a first step, since they sometimes exacerbate depression.

Omega-3s all the way. Even mainstream agencies are now forced to admit its effectiveness for depression. Other supplements that might be helpful include calcium/vitamin D, magnesium and SAM-e.

Exercise is also vital, as is exposure to natural sunlight. People have become so afraid of skin cancer that we now have a serious vitamin D epidemic going on. Vitamin D is responsible for hormone production, which can play a huge role in mood regulation (see here)

What type of depression does she have? There are many depressive disorders (major, atypical, bipolar, dysthymia, PMDD, SAD, etc.) They don't all respond equally to SSRIs, so you might wanna research her symptoms further to determine which type she has and what's recommended...most doctors don't have a clue :\

I found a fish oil with Vitamin D an she likes the taste so I'll pick some of that up for her.

I don't want to tell/ask her to stop using SSRI's or to change. That is her doctors an her business IMO. I'm pretty sure it is major depression.

i just started zoloft for anxiety disorder. i'm on 25mg and it's already helped in a noticeable way to ween me off of my klonopin. IMO zoloft isn't the best medication for a major depressive, more so anxiety even though it's an SSRI. i would suggest she ask her doctor for a trial of lexapro (they make them). remeron is also a tricyclic that works pretty much immediately with little to no side effects over any other anti depressant, i was meant to be on it to gain weight so that's the only downfall on that one is that it will increase her hunger

How frequently do you take magnesium? I've got some magnesium chelate and also suffer from slight anxiety/depression. How much is good to take daily?

DLPA. it helps boost the body's natural endorphin levels. I'm currently using it right now to mediate opiate tolerance. I've had very desirable effects noticeable on the first dose.
