Hi Guys,
I'm struggling at the moment with a recent job offer and want to see what you all think..
I'm currently working as a technical consultant for an ISP, providing customer support as well as running a team of 4 and providing 24 hour on call support in case of an internet/network outage that requires me to be contactable all the time, day and night and be able to get to our server farm to resolve any issues.
The downsides to this job are the hours I work.
I work 9am - 5:30pm at the office ($18.71ph)
I then go home and am on call in case of emergency 24/7, which I don't get paid for unless something actually happens and I get a call, but if it is a Saturday or a Sunday, I get $50 for both days for being on call with calls extra on top)
Every Thursday night, I also do another 3 hours of customer support (6:30pm to 9:30pm - $50).
Every 4th weekend, I do Friday night (6:30pm - 9:30pm - $50) then 9am - 9:30pm Saturday and Sunday (130 each)
The pay isn't fantastic, normally clearing about $1300AUD per fortnight. The job is good because I like helping people and the team I work with are great, give or take a few small issues and the company I work for is great. It's an industry that's growing and changing so it's something I can really use to learn to better myself and to go forward..
BUT... I recieved a call from a friend of mine who owns the best tattoo shop in town and he wants me to work for him. It'll be a complete change of industry and will mean i'll be going back to being an apprentice and also studying advanced body piercing, which the shop doesn't do currently.
Working in the body mod industry is my dream job. I'm just so scared that I won't get enough work there to survive and feel like I should be "responsible" and not leave a good thing, even though i'm being pushed to my limit considering the amount of hours my current job requires. If I leave here to go work at the tattoo place, i'll go to a 50% commission for each piece and the same with any piercings. If I sell any jewelry, I get commission from that as well as the shop.
Another part of working at the shop is running an online wholesale business selling needles, tattoo guns, jewelry and doing the legwork of posting the supplies after the sales are complete, getting commission for that as well.
The friend i'll be working for trusts me and I know all of the artists in the shop and he thinks i'll be a perfect fit and is looking into ways to get my foot in the door so that I can be financially stable before I take the plunge and leave my current job, but i'm still apprehensive. He doesn't expect me to quit where I am and work there for less than i'm making now, but said that if I build up a client base, I could make upto $3000 a week. I'd have flexible hours and be able to come and go as I pleased and I wouldn't have to worry about hiding my tattoos and piercings, like I have to at my office job. I have to admit that it'd be nice to be able to be who I am without having to compromise just to sit in front of a computer where no customers will see me.
I guess i'm just scared of a seachange but want to know what you guys think of making the change in my life to do something I truly want to do, or whether you think it's too risky.
On another note, I get to do my first tattoo tomorrow, so that will help me determine whether i'll be able to make the leap, but i'd love some feedback from you, oh so wise bluelighters
Thanks everyone, sorry if I rambled!
