They haven't worked very well, and I have quite bad anxiety, the doctor said to come back if they don't work and shed give me something else, what do you think she would give me? I took paxil by the way and I'm 19 y/o male.

Who told you to take an SSRI for anxiety? Frankly I don't think that's a very wise idea.

Speculating on what a doctor will prescribe is fairly meaningless. If it isn't working, just go back and let her know that, and let her do her job.

A few people here told me to take ssri, but what are the alternative medications for anxiety?

Yes I am making lifestyle changes, I've gone over that with the doctor, but the doctor is not going to prescribe me cannabis.

We can't know what your doctor will recommend, nor can we help you get specific drugs from your doctor. Just tell your doctor in detail about your symptoms/issues and what you have tried in the past. I would highly recommend you try non-drug treatments instead of or in addition to drugs. Let me know if you'd like a list of good ones to try. There are also a number of natural supplements that can help with anxiety. Would you like a list of those?

benzodiazepines like diazepam, clonazepam, etc are standard treatment for anxiety. if you live in a state with medical weed, you can get prescribed weed, although that might exacerbate the anxiety.

My psychiatrist told me that SSRI's are commonly referred to/ used as "anti-anxiety" medication, not just strictly for depression as most people think.

My doctor put me on celexa once for anxiety/insomnia
I had an eppisode where i broke in my front door with a headbutt because i couldnt get the key in the door.
After that i told my doctor no more ssris, and he hasnt tried since.

They are. More commonly they're used for depression but anxiety too.

OP, we can't predict what your doctor will do and we definitely don't prescribe medicine or offer medical advice beyond harm reduction.

not a big surprise your psychiatrist would tell you that. SSRI's do not work well for anxiety though, in many cases they increase it, especially at first. They aren't even very effective for depression. I also don't think you should have to try 10 different SSRIs just in case one may work.

don't listen to the ones who tell you that you should not take benzos if the other meds do not work for you. my source? 13 years of being given the wrong medication. i was giving the right medication once, only to lose that psychiatrist when he moved out of state. i am just now going to be doing the caseworker intake to do another hospital to TRY to get the medication i need. people will tell you you don't need them. they are wrong, in one case. if you do need them to live a good quality of life. i would recommend klonopin personally because it kicks in slow and lasts way longer. much more stable than trying to work with other benzos.

^ yeah me nether, where I'm from they don't even consider benzos for someone in there late 20's. So there prepared to run you through a gauntlet of ssri's/ssni's.

do you think it's right that they do that, or do you think psychiatrists could be even more misinformed than regular doctors? there was a study with a computerized doctor and regular doctors. the computer had 99%% accuracy. doctors had 74%. psychiatry is a tricky business. do you want to put your life into the hands of someone who may think they know what's right for everyone when they could be operating from a skewed perspective instead of medical knowledge - or psychological knowledge? i don't think that's wise.

Ask about Buspar. (Buspirone)

I took it for a while and it really helped. It's not an SSRI, but it has SSRI properties.

I'm 19 too , I've taken Lustral (Zoloft as it's named elsewhere) which gave me bad RLS so I stopped.

I then went on citalopram for 2 months which made my body feel quite sore and ruined my motivation and did absolutely nothing for anxiety.

Currently on Lyrica (pregabalin) 150mgx2 a day which seems like a good drug (at least compared to SSRIs) I get no real bad side effects, some numbness in the middle between the thighs :\ and some people say it makes you dumber. I think it's working a little bit at least. Benzos are still the best anxiolytics (maybe barbs as well lol) but not a long term solution, cognitive behavioural therapy could be an option as mentioned before.
