I am thinking of seeing a pain specialist...Am I wasting my time?

I am a retired bodybuilder but still train hard 5-6 days a week. I have arthritis in my hips, no cartilage in my left shoulder, and many other injuries....but the pain from those injuries is manageable. What really hurts are my feet, I have plantar fasciitis. About twice a week I am on my feet (training people or coaching my wrestlers) for so long the pain is extremely bad. On those 2 days I will take a little Kratom (maybe 5 grams) if I am at a tournament or 1-2 Tramadol at night. Tramadol works great, I don't need anything stronger. I take 3-4 pills a week, no more

However, my Mexican supplier seems to have gone out of business, so I am contemplating going to a doctor, a pain specialist. Unfortunately, it seems that in todays world, doctors will just let you suffer in fear of politicians.

Am I wasting my time?

While I'm sure you Googled treatments, being in the UK does alter my results somewhat.

In his youth my father played rugby and picked up a severe jaw injury that left him in pain for decades. But botulism toxin totally relieves the pain for 6 months. Pretty nasty having dozens of injections into jawline from inside the mouth. But he did it - so the pain must have been severe.

But he never complained. Old school.

Well, I ended up going the black market route. I posted a thread. Our system is broken.

They wanted to do an injection in my shoulder, but everyone I talked to said it did not work. I run low dosage HGH and I can train just fine.

In the UK we only prescribe one tenth as many opioids as the US (per capita) but weirdly, as I've got older, they decided it was the way to go. With opioids, maybe the logic is that I will die of other causes before they run out of therapeutic window. But the UK is crazy. The BNF states that some patients may require >400mg/day. No WAY would I want to go THERE. As long as I possibly can, I will not ask for more. Some people never produce tolerance to the analgesic effects. Fingers crossed I'm one of them.

1 or 2 Tramadol work like a charm for me, I don't need more. Are you talking about today? I have a friend who is a pain doc and he likes to brag about not prescribing opioids. Docs rarely prescribe them here any more. I had serious oral surgery a while back and think I got about 15 codeine, but I actually only used 12. I think dentists are not as paranoid as other docs.

I hope not....I am very scared of an opioid addiction. Actually one of the main reasons to see a specialist is to make sure I am not taking too much. But I already have so many medical bill from a massive seizure last year. I paid off as much as I could but my ambulance was $3k and my insurance did not cover it and I could not afford to pay.
Just got my credit report today and it went from 743 to 699 :(

Well... I know I have to do something for my foot. It's been hurting like hell for the past three weeks and I don't know what caused it. My doctor told me to go get it X-rayed, but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet. What do you think would cause foot pain ?

Not to alarm
but my stepdad had same symptoms last week
40 inch blood clot from groin to foot
twice boostered from the
hokeypokey

Update: Have not been on my feet too much and have hardly taken anything. I think I only took one Tramadol and about 5 grams of Kratom this week.

You are extremely eligible for a pain management if it genuinly isnt managed by otc and you just need to be honest

Right now I am not training a lot of people and not on my feet a lot, so I have hardly touched any pain meds. However I may be helping to start a new gym and might be doing a lot of clients. If that pans out (IE the money is good) yes I will need to probably see someone.I am well stocked on Tramadol and Kratom, and know how sneaky an opioid addiction can be (although I have never had a problem).

It sounds like you have a pain problem tho ? An opiod problem is easy to see mate and that use is genuinely with low medical uses

If pain management doctors in NY are like the ones in Pennsylvania, then you're not wasting your time. But be aware that you will be monitored for any other drug use while under their care. I have a problem with that because my first choice for managing my chronic pain is smoking weed. My pain management doctors eventually had me on a high dosage of fentanyl and I decided that I had enough of their "pain management "! With the help of my doctor, I weaned myself off of all opiates. That was five years ago. Some days I experience pain that is so intense that I question that decision. Most days I smoke some weed to relax and I can handle the pain.
I also do other recreational drugs, but no opiates. (I used Kratom for about a year just after quitting fentanyl. )

I simply do not enjoy the effect of marijuana. I find that using opioids (Tramadol Kraton) infrequently works really well for me.

I don't think ANY sane doctor would preclude you from obtaining tramadol.

The problems with kratom seem to be that the vendors or suppliers are monkeying around with the alkaloids and even adding other actives. Their also seems to be a systemic problem with high levels of heavy metals (lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, chromium, cadmium and so on) in samples. One BLer even posted a link to a specialist lab that would test kratom for alkaloids for $96/sample (which seems VERY cheap) and offered an extra test for 'heavy metals' for $80.

When people providing COAa (certificate of analysis) actually offer specific testing for heavy metals, I can only presume it's not exactly a rare problem.

I'm not quite sure why these heavy metals keep turning up. But the earliest reports seems to have arrived in 2018. My THEORY is that the Rubiaceae family of plants is used in the phytoextraction of said heavy metals from soil. By accident or design Mitragyna speciosa was planted on land with high levels of heavy metals for said phytoextraction and knowingly or unknowingly, the kratom has ended up being sold.

As I've said elsewhere, I can honestly see people growing Calabar because it's toxin can easily be deprotected into eseroline - quite a potent opiate. Law seems to struggle in banning plants because, well, selective breeding (and now GM) can simply adapt a related species to produce the alkaloid sought by the grower.

The Oriental Poppy isn't banned because it doesn't produce codeine or morphine BUT a GM version (the Norman Strain) does produce large amounts of thebaine which is the precursor to oxycodone/oxymorphone/etorphine and so on. Sooner or later SOMEONE is going to work out that the raw extracted alkaloids are also likely legal but offer a precursor to opioids more potent than heroin...

My use this week has been even lower. I think Monday I had 3 rams of Kratom, no Tramadol so far this week.

My clients all quit (common after Thanksgiving) so I have not been on my feet at all and have taken pretty much nothing the last few weeks. A few weeks ago I had a really bad period of depression and anxiety.

I talked w/ my psychiatrist and shocking to me she prescribed some Ambient, I was surprised. Only taken it once in the last 3 days and it worked great.
