Besides the sheer quantity of them, they seem more aggressive when approaching and asking for money, more outwardly visible mental illness. What do you think differs between the SoCal homeless population and the homeless in other places?
Around here there are relatively few homeless folks. I'm sure the weather and total population plays a large part. When they do ask for money or food it's usually in a rather passive (signs) or gentle (kind approach) way whereas out there I've had plenty of encounters where they come up to me with my kids (which immediately puts me on edge vs when I'm by myself also true of any stranger for the most part) and demand I help them like I owe them and after I say I'm sorry I can't or offer to buy them some food they continue to ask, "cmon man I just need $20 I know you've got it" (which is also something folks around here never seem to demand a certain sum, they're happy with 2 quarters).
I'm sure it's a small representation of the total population of homeless out there that are more aggressive, more psychotic, deeper into addiction or other problems, it's just that those are theore visible ones. Also, I think methamphetamine is quite a bit cheaper on the street there than anywhere around here.
Sometimes they'll tell a joke or do a magic trick which I do find somewhat charming but overall just different from folks around here or even NYC.
