hypothetically, can one convert 5meoDMT HCL to freebase?

The same way you could other alkaloids... but you'll need quite a bit so you don't loose a large percentage. Dissolve the salts in water, basify untill you get crystals (pH 11), then extract into non-polar solvent, seperate, evaporate.
 
I do have the HCl salt of it, which actually seems ok to smoke, same dose etc.. maybe tastes nastier and is a little harsh though..

Only one time did I have some really pure beautiful white 5-meo-dmt, and that stuff was smoooooth! ..and it actually tasted like.. grapes i think.. fruity, good, all the other batches i've had tasted just like this HCL salt does (maybe they were all the HCl salt?)
 
To be sure whether it's the HCl salt or not you could test the melting point of a small sample. MP of 5-Meo-DMT = 69-70C, MP of 5-Meo-DMT-HCl = 145-146C. A simple way to test would be to put some in a glass container, boil some water, and submerge, once equilibrium is reached if the freebase it will have melted easily, if it's the HCl, it will still be in crystalline form.
 
Interesting that you can also smoke the HCl-salt, yaesutom. Probably the m.p. is the only criterium that rules. Has anybody tried to smoke other HCl salts? (DPT)
 
you can smoke HCl salts because you can heat them so that the salt dissociates into the freebase neutral compound and HCl, which is vaporized. The fact that you can vaporize HCl probably helps make this process work with HCl salts and not other salts.
