should this be in the advance drug discussion?...not sure, im sorry if i disobeyed anything...

so my dog desires some fuckin clean, dry ethyl ether out of OTC sources such as Prestone Starting Fluid and then adding anhydrous MgSO4 to further dry the ether solution....

a hypothetical extraction procedure is spraying the whole can in a sealable glass container until the glass container is half full. then distilled water is added but NOT filled up all the way leaving a bit of space between solution and top. shake container for 5-10 minutes. 2 layers are formed. seperate the ether solution from the water solution. discard water. whalllah! OTC ether!

but heres the real question.....would adding some anhydrous MgSO4 be any benifit to further dry and further purify the OTC ether solution?

who doesnt want that true anesthetic feeling...haha...anhydrous MgSO4 is a known drying agent but will it help in this hypothetical dream?

1) You should not give your dog ether ;-) Saying things like that just makes your posts hard to read.

2) Your problem is not whether the ether is dry. Who cares if there's water in it? (And, for that matter, if you don't want water in it, adding distilled water is extremely counterproductive). MgSO4 would help remove water.

3) The problem is the presence of hydrocarbons in the ether (most starting fluids are 50% ether 50% petroleum distillate), which are less polar than water, and much harder to remove. You do not want to inhale the fumes of petroleum distillate any more than you want to huff gasoline or something like that. Huffing hydrocarbons is unhealthy.
Getting high huffing starting fluid is better than huffing gasoline, because the ether is more active, and so you end up inhaling less hydrocarbon fumes, but it's still not good for you, and contributes to unpleasant sideeffects.

The only way i see ether being seperated from the crap in starting fluid is careful (careful remember, it's explosively flammable, and the fumes are heavier than air and creep along the floor) distillation. Not a home operation!

And as an aside, i found ether (in my younger stupider days) to be unpleasant, causing headaches, and a few bad/scary experiences.
Toxic contaminants, not a good high, and physically hazardous. Just use real drugs.

In the interest of HR, if you're goddamned-dead-set on huffing starting fluid, spray->huff once -> spray different part of rag. The ether is more volitile than the crap, so you'll get the least crap in the first hit. Be aware that the fumes can linger and are, as i said, explosively flamable.

You will not remove the benzene and other toxic/carcinogenic additives....

Buy at least technical or lab grade ether in its pure form....

Unfortunately the hydrocarbons mixed in with diethyl ether in starting fluid usually are difficult to distill because of similar boiling points to one another. For instance, the boiling point of pentane and diethyl ether are very similar. You should be able to use the mixture anyway as a reasonable good solvent, however, especially if you distill it around the boiling point of DEE.

Pure diethyl ether though... It's not a controlled substance, so why not just look around for somewhere to order it from?

this was actually what i was aiming for. :)
i didnt mentioned my intentions at first for the fear of "self incrimidating".

so my ether/heptane solution, as a non-polar solvent for seperating certian alkaloids from a basic (ph>7) solution after a/b extraction, would be a reasonable good solvent?

Yep. Wash it first a bunch of times with water and then dry it.
