do you wake up in the night gasping for breath feeling like you were seconds from death from a massive heart attack...well good news it could possibly just be a hypnic jerk. google it if you are as terrified as i was.

also if you feel a shock sensation accompanied by a snap down your neck during the day that may also be a hypnic jerk...hooray for hypnic jerks!!! thanks a million heroin im off you a year and you have still left me your legacy!!!

this belongs in the darkside please move it mod.

you sure it's not sleep apnea? If you aren't still using opiates then i'd be inclined to think it was something else. Same thing happens to me all the time but i think it's because opiates also worsen sleep apnea as well as cause hypnic jerks. Anyway, thanks for bringing this up as it does happen to me quite a bit. It's that day dream hallucinating part that i find so interesting from nodding, i have gone to some weird places in my mind in that state.

Are you on suboxone? I would get these every single night while I was on subs. My entire body would jump off the bed! I would even get them throughout the day if I was just sitting down relaxing. Definitely fucking terrifying when you don't know what they are.

no fab im completely clean[i dont even take asperin] but it started when i was on heroin.but you can get them through stress which i have a lot of lately.

robot i thought it was sleep apnea at first, but it turns out its a form of hypnic jerks,so do you guys wake up and for a few seconds you cant see and every time it happens it lasts longer and you fear that this time you wont snap out of it?

I've always been awake when I had mine, or right on the verge of falling asleep. I took them seriously, but once I read that many other people on suboxone have had the same side effect it gave me some consolation. Yours and robo's seem like they would be even scarier. Have you talked to a doctor about this?

no im ok though i dont have the money to see a doctor, but after speaking to a few people online about of have exact same symptoms im fairly confident about it,although if i wrong and robots right it could be dangerous as sleep apnea can be fatal! i should be grand though as some times during the day i get that snap in the neck accompanied by the twitch that people experience during a hypnic jerk!also like you im just about to fall in to the most relaxing cosy comfortable sleep when i get them,im not actually fully asleep.
people with sleep apnea experience it during heavy sleep and snore a lot which i dont

i should go to a doctor but at the minute i get 188 euro a week and after i pay billS etc im only left with 29 euro before i have even bought food!! FFS!!!

I had a night shift job and we would sometimes doze off when it was slow. I literally jerked out of my chair onto the floor one time. Fucking madness!

can't remember which guy did this but someone kept a pencil in their hand so that every time they nodded out they would awake slightly to hear the pencil and this kept them in that hynagogic state. I used to do that in class to keep myself going lol.

poor sleeping habits, bad schedules, stress, anxiety are all causes of hypnic jerks. It happens to a lot of people. If i drink a bunch of poppy tea and lay down it will happen consistently. probably 5/10 nights i sleep i wake up in sleep paralysis with the most incredible body buzz imaginable, at this point i can chose to separate from my body or force myself awake. I usually get scared about leaving my body though. I also have the classic hypnic jerks where my body shocks me awake and especially experience the 'falling' experience. I think i have sleep apnea, sometimes i wake up gasping for air, i also snore often and sleep very deeply. I'm not sure if the opiates are bringing it out or if i actually have sleep apnea, i need to see a Dr. about it as well.

Wow, I always wondered what this was. Everytime I take too many percs, I wake up in the middle of the night with the feeling that I'm suffocating. It puts me into a full blown panic state and it takes about 40 minutes to get rid of the fear. Fucking terrifying. I also get really bad sleep paralysis

read up on hypnic jerks and sleep apnea seeker, its very hard to find the symptoms on jerks,it took me ages to find the symptoms im experiencing but there is a lot of info on sleep apnea!! if you think you have sleep apnea go straight to your doctor...or you might wake up dead tomorrow!!,lol
