Does anyone know if the body builds up tolerance to antihistamines like it does with benzos? I know you don't have to worry about withdrawal effects, but I'm just wondering about decrease in effectiveness over time when it comes to treating anxiety.

Yes, it does. But it's going to be a lot more forgiving than benzo tolerance. You might find hydroxyzine effective for weeks (minimum) before a significantly high dose is required for baseline effects, whereas for some people, the equivalent situation with benzos would be hours/days.

Try not to use hydroxyzine daily and you shouldn't gain too much of a serious tolerance to it.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Then benzo route has failed, so now I'm on hydroxyzine on a daily (not as needed) basis, which is working much much better for the time being at least. Just wondering if it would remain consistent in its anxiolytic effects or if eventually I'm going to have to find something else. :\

Well it works differently than benzos, so there is a possibility that you may keep the anxiolytic effects of hydroxyzine. I can't be sure though, I have never had to take it daily.

I'm sorry to hear about your anxiety, but I am glad to hear hydroxyzine works well for you for now at least!

This is a great thread idea though, I'd love to see more Bluelighter's experiences.

I second that sentiment on both counts.
I've only ever used hydroxyzine during acute opiate/substance withdrawals.
However at the time I found the hydroxyzine to be quite helpful.

TLDR: Information regarding back story on usage follows.
NSFW:
As at the time I had decided to cold turkey any & all potentially addicting &/or intoxicating substances.
Opana, Oxycodone, Heroin, Fentanyl, (Opiates in general), cigarettes, cannabis, sporadic benzo use, alcohol, sporadic amphetamine use, etc.
Basically the whole nine yards & then some. :!
In retrospect a somewhat unnecessary test of personal strength & willpower but I digress.
As such I passed on using benzo's to ease the pain of the opiate withdrawals & gave hydroxyzine a shot.
It definitively had beneficial effects.

I've really only ever used the substance sparingly in general though; so my experience is somewhat limited.
However during the time period when I used it for a few weeks I did not notice any significant gain in tolerance.
I don't know if that anecdotal information will prove useful to anyone but I figured I'd share. :)
Hopefully it is of some use to some member of BL.

I am scripted to hydroxyzine, and from personal experience I can attest that it does in fact build up a tolerance.

However, I find that tolerance can decrease pretty rapidly, or perhaps I don't know, but I will tell you my experience with the drug and you can go from there.

I am scripted 30 x 50mg of hydroxyzine per month. I find that this drug has many benefits, and I'm quite happy that I'm scripted it. It is an antihistamine, however, it tends to act like a mild benzo and it can be good for both sleeping and relieving insomnia.

I'm also prescribed to suboxone, or when I feel like it I do heroin. Some people shoot up hydroxyzine with an opiate and it gives them a much better rush. I would believe it, although never done it, but when I have taken hydroxyzine with opiates it has greatly increased the high. Another added benefit of hydroxyzine, which isn't huge, but it's pleasant, is due to the fact that it is an anti-histamine it will prevent those odd shaped red blotches from appearing after injecting an opiate.

I usually go through my entire one month script fairly quickly, and when I am doing heroin I tend to do it much faster. As time goes on during the script I find that I need more and more hydroxyzine to achieve the same effect, however, by the time I get my next script ~2-3 weeks later, the tolerance has completely dropped back to 0 and I can start from scratch with a low dose of hydroxyzine and just rinse and repeat.

Hope this has helped.

I'm assuming your reffering to IV use of hydroxyzine when you say shooting up.
If I'm wrong I apologize. :)
Regardless I'd like to share this information with other BL members who read this thread.
As far as I know IV use of hydroxyzine is not a wise decision.
The reasoning for this follows in the thread link below.

IV Hydroxyzine..

Hope that helps clarify things a bit.
I just wanted to make sure that as much HR information as possible was available.
I'd link to the individual posts that have the most useful information but I'm pressed for time. :\
I believe it's further into the thread that complications such as hemolysis from IV administration of hydroxyzine is discussed.
Again hope that is of use.
