Greetings,

I recently started a new play day here and there of making a solution with around an eighth of black tar, 30 ML of bacteriostatic water, dental cotton, and my precious Whatman 0.2 PVDF 25mm wheel filters that I buy by the case. Prior to this I had only done with with Dilaudid.

Based on the D experience, I was very excited about it and the first batch was around 150 mg per ml which is just fine for my lightweight ass. But then I heard about Hydrolysis(!) I also have heard people say only a little bacteriostatic water should be used whereas I use it only..

Anyway, the internet has suggested hydrolysis occurs anywhere from very quickly (like overnight) to months or even years(?) Is there any way for me to figure it out exactly by concentration, volume, ph and temperature?

Also, is my dream of being able to store sterile vials of liquid H for long periods a farce?

FWIW, the 8th typically only lasts a couple weeks so sometimes I wonder if I even need to use bacteriostatic water at all. I'd rather eliminate benzyl alcohol from going into my veins.. and/or are there alternatives?

I think I may simply use sterile water this next time and smaller vials.. just do a few days at a time or so in 5 or 10 ML glass vials.

Thanks for any advice on this matter!!

Spontaneous hydrolysis of heroin in buffered solution.
Smith PT, Hirst M, Gowdey CW.

Electron-capture gas-liquid chromatography was used to study the spontaneous hydrolysis of heroin in phosphate buffer (pH 6.4 and pH 7.4) at 23 degrees C. Aliquots of solution were taken over a 24-h period. After extraction at pH 8.9 into propan-2-ol (10%)-ethyl acetate, deacetylated products were made into hepafluorobutyrate derivatives which were analyzed quantitatively using nalorphine as the internal standard. Heroin decomposes to 06-monoacetylmorphine (06-MAM) under these conditions. Further decomposition to morphine was not observed. Spontaneous hydrolysis was faster at pH 7.4 (first-order rate constant, 9.6 x 10-5 min-1) than at pH 6.4 (first-order rate constant, 3.0 x 10-5 min-1). In 24 h, the decomposition to 06-MAM was 13 and 4%, respectively.

this has been answered before

I'm pretty sure pharma diamorphine is stored dry in ampules in those countries that still rx it. It's not stored in water because it hydrolyses in storage. Definitely not stable for more than about a week.

highly alkaline or acidic conditions will definitely promote hydrolysis. so will certain e.g. metal ions, enzymes, and some impurities. I would store sol'ns between pH 5 and 8, 0 - 10C, and in the dark. Concentration should not effect rate of hydrolysis. Temperature, pH, time, & impurities will.

Also, is my dream of being able to store sterile vials of liquid H for long periods a farce?

yes. Really, don't store solutions of H for more than 2 or 3 days, as more often than not the heroin is less pure than you'd think.

Thanks for the info and such prompt responses! Yes, I've found the pub med article but it was a little over my head. That said, I'll record pH on this next batch. :)
If I am reading that correctly, it is saying that the decomposition rate for the pH 6.4 was 13% in 24 hours and for the pH of 7.4 is was 4%? Doesn't that suggest more alkaline is better or at least target close to neutral of 7.0?

To be honest, this last batch was my first with BTH, have mostly been a Dilaudid guy. That said, I've feel I have an acute understanding of the difference between H and Morph and in my experience, the solution was virtually unchanged for about a week. I get a heavy histamine reaction from even small amounts of Morphine and that had only started happening a little over a week in. So for around 30 ML at .1 per ML, I didn't notice anything beyond a slight degradation in strength until around 192 hours in, FWIW, and even then the histamine reaction was very mild.

And this stuff is tar but it's much higher quality than average. I usually wheel filter the entire solution one last time at the end and into the sterile vial.

Storage has been in my cold refrigerator thus far, in it's own dry cardboard box typical of what a vitamin jar would come in.

I've actually been hoping to find something other than benzyl alcohol to use as a preservative as well since my body does not seem to like it very much.. Also, it's not exactly a healthy substance to be pushing through our veins, kidneys, liver and such..

Would love to create a powder to which I can simply add sterile water when it was time but most of the reading I've done on that suggests I'd need a chemistry degree to pull that off.

Thanks again for the advice :)
