Hume highway speed cameras

I think, personally there is a fine line between policing and revenue raising. Having said that no one LIKES a speed camera but in the same breath no one LIKES to be killed by someone else doing 160 kmph either.

Yup, that's exactly it except that speed cameras are set to record people 3-5km/h over. If it was like the rest of the world (usually), 10-15mp/h, 10-20km/h ish is usually what I've seen that other states/countries have it set at, I don't think the majority of people who are annoyed would be. There will always be a subset that _ANY_ speed camera is evil, but I think if the 3km/h variance, of at least Victoria's cameras are raised to higher, a few people's knickers wouldn't get in a knot.

And just a quick google about speed cameras, in Tasmania. From http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/04/29/2885330.htm

Tasmania's police are being accused of using speed cameras to raise revenue, rather than to advance road safety.

The Department's figures show most of the state's top 10 crash locations are not on the list of the top speed detection sites.

Police data shows most speeding drivers are caught on Hobart's busy urban roads.

About half the state's speeding fines were issued on Hobart's Brooker Highway or the Tasman Bridge.

An Auditor-General's report last year shows just 15 percent of speeding fines were issued in zones with limits above 100kph, where most serious crashes occur.

Location, location, location is also a pet hate of mine. Put them where people actually crash (but seeing this might not be at cars OVER the speed limit and/or not a high ROI - Return Of Investment, these areas may not be desirable for speed camera operators.

It seems that the Queensland State Gov has encountered the Camera calibration issue and have had to waive a large quantity of fines issued on the CLEM7

More than 1100 motorists caught speeding in the Clem7 tunnel since its opening two months ago will escape penalty.

Speeding notices issued to drivers are being withdrawn because testing of the eight speed cameras did not comply with legislation.

Anyone who has received an infringement notice prior to 12.30 today will not have to pay.

Rest of the article is here

What bikki_muncher has said is completely true. Funny i came accross this thread as i just read a whole lot of information about it. It actually works, If put forward correctly in court by a legal team that knows there shit, you can get off any speeding fine, whether it be by police radar, or camera. For more information www.aussiespeedingfines.com

That said i dont condone speeding. But would also be lieing if i said i never went over the speed limit.

The following is an extract from a Consumer Affairs warning.

Public Warning - Aussie Speeding Fines
PUBLIC WARNING ISSUED UNDER S162A of the FAIR TRADING ACT 1999
I Dr Claire Noone, the Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria, being satisfied that it is in the public interest to do so and pursuant to section 162A(a) of the Fair Trading Act 1999, issue the following warning to the public identifying and giving information about the business practices of a person or persons trading as: Aussie Speeding Fines.

The person or persons trading as Aussie Speeding Fines are responsible for the marketing and sale of a book, via its website aussiespeedingfines.com, (the website) which recommends consumers pursue a number of different strategies for avoiding paying speeding and traffic fines, and provides pro forma letters to send to law enforcement agencies.

The website was established for Michael Gareth Palmer (Mr Palmer) of Beaumaris, Victoria. The website is operated at least in part by Mr Palmer and or Libra Consulting Services Pty Ltd a company of which Mr Palmer is the sole Director and shareholder.

The Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria warns consumers that the material contained within the book may be misleading, and may cause significant detriment to consumers if pursued in response to the receipt of an actual traffic infringement notice or summons for a driving offence. Consumers wishing to challenge speeding or traffic offences are advised to seek legal advice from a qualified legal practitioner, rather than relying on information and pro forma letters that have been published anonymously.

Consumers should be wary of this internet site that claims to provide specialist information, but does not provide the name of the author of the publication and the details of qualifications of the author to provide specialist information.

For advice on avoiding scams consumers can contact the Consumer Affairs Victoria helpline on 1300 55 81 81.

Dated 4 September 2008

Dr Claire Noone
Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria

Also, for a REAL proven 'method', speak to this guy http://www.trafficlaw.com.au/forum/index.php?sid=8ad5ac220adda18400a4934b5c8f150c He is a barrister in Melb that specialises in traffic law.

thanks for that link ^

Other than that site though i have heard its possible. But after reading your post will be more doubtful now.

Good attitude :) It's POSSIBLE but don't think you will automatically get off if you pay $$ to a website. Like most things legal related, it pays to know/hire people who are trained in the matter(s) related with regards to the charge(s) and/or court appearance(s) 8o

And just to add, a friend is going to court to contest a speeding fine next week. They got a letter the other day from the court saying the court of Victoria does not recognise speeding fine cases to be used for legal aid so if they want legal representation, it's going to be from a hired person and/or friend. They are going to just submit a video they took of the place and possibly photos along with character references (legal advice from a trained friend recommended that, alas it's "too small" for the said friend to take on)

They want the court appearance more to show the STUPIDITY of the fine they got (it's a dead set 'trap' due to it looking like a 100km/h highway and the roads they used, there are no speed signs along it so he followed traffic and 3 cars at the same time were all radar detected @ 80km/h in a (signed later down the road which he has never seen/been past) 60km/h road. So, even if he gets to show the video of his route that shows there is no way in hell anyone would know it's a 60km/h zone and can look the cop into the eye to show they know it's a "farce" with the speeding fines they take there, their day off work + court appearance will be worth it =D

Guns don't kill people... rappers do!

Srsly though, the whole back and forth about speed cameras is just wasted energy to me, I just keep coming back to this thread to see if the OP ended up getting a fine in the mail.

I havent got any fines yet.

Thanks for all the information everyone, quite interesting.
