How would you know if a drug dealer was selling you L-meth instead of D-meth or D/L?

It wouldn't get you high. Crystals usually imply purity, but I have known dealers to cut ice methamphetamine with epsom salts, which look kind of similar but are actually magnesium sulfate, MgSO4. Epsom salts don't burn clean. If you have crystals AND they vape clean with no residue AND they get you really high for hours, then you should be good to go. But of course, as with all things in life, there are always exceptions, and there are no money back guarantees. Your mileage may vary.
 
These days it's all about recrystallization using methylsulfonylmethane. Leaves residue though.
 
L-meth is OTC (Vick's inhaler) and "considered" nonactive. Makes me wonder about the whole "prope-dope" (made with Phenyl-2-propanone) rage of the racemic being subjectively "better" somehow from back prior to the U.S. law changes circa 1999-2000 (this folklore being so prevalent, it made it into Breaking Bad as being part of what contributed to making his 'blue meth' *so* much better than the other on the street. IRL you'd think this would lessen the potency by a measure of around 50%, whereas in the show, Mr. White made a huge to-do about the major difference between 98% and 99% purity.)
 
He didn't want to make a superpotent meth, he just wanted a pharmaceutical grade purity as a quality thing. Not sure how the pure D isomer falls into the Breaking Bad story either way.

In one episode, they steal precursor in a barrel that would make the racemic variety; and characters in the show spoke of how "much better" it was.

Yeah, they did. When using this synthesis, it gives a 50-50 racemic mix of both the D and L enantiomers. The L enantiomer has barely any central activity compared to D, and instead just increases physical side effects.

When he was making it the other way, by reduction of pseudoephedrine, the product would only be the D enantiomer.
 
L-meth actually seems to interfere with D-meth's unbridled stimulatory overachieving. I have a hard time staying up for more than one or two nights with racemic meth, which is qualitatively inferior to pure D. It lasts forever without the L isomer thrown in and can easily be had from the reduction of ephedra from ma huang, which you can grow in your garden and do an extraction on. No fancy chiral separatory equipment and reagents are necessary! And neither is the highly watched and stinky methylamine a requirement.
