How to safely use nitrous oxide

To be honest, it would seem nearly impossible to suffer from hypoxia from inhaling nitrous from a balloon. Should you pass out, you will no longer be breathing from a balloon, and you will begin breathing due to autonomic nervous system, which will of course quickly bring your blood oxygenation back up.

When breathing from a medical type set up, typically its a 30% oxy 70% nitrous. (As commonly used in dental procedures , labour and as an analgesic in emergency medicine) I don't recommend setting up your own mask system without some decent background in it, and never use it without competent person watching you.

But I say it's damn near impossible to have respiratory arrest or hypoxia from a whippet in a balloon.

^ in general I tend to agree, but as I don't know for certain I feel more comfortable taking breaths and I like to advise others too. I do know of one death from nitrous but it involved breathing it directly from a large cylinder for too long causing hypoxia. However, I agree, with balloons it is unlikely. Still, this is a harm reduction forum so always best to err on the side of caution! :)
