how to remove morning glory seed husks

so these aliens came to me in my bedroom one night with a message of convenience, apparently just for the hell of it. They've must have been good-natured aliens, possibly of a higher collective consciousness than that of most humans, but not necessarily. here's what they told me:

if you want to eat some lsa from morning glory seeds (heavenly blue is the best, followed by pearly gates, to the best of my knowledge anyway)

rinse the seeds with some soap and water first and let them dry, paper towels and a hair dryer may prove to be very helpful. maybe watch out for too much heat and the possibility of the seeds being strewn everywhere from the fucking fan thing that blows hot air. [sorry, i don't know much french, i beg you forgive my naiivete} unless you're sure they're organic and pesticide free or whatever. also it might be good if they're slightly moist so that the husks might break apart more easily into larger chunks.

what you need: a mortar and pestle, some pliers, a few jar type apparatus, and a pretty fine strainer like half a mesh tea ball thing. the otherworldly beings recommended placing a it over a shot glass, because it's very likely that the rim of the half tea strainer will be perfectly held in place. You'll want a slim metal knife type thing with a rounded point once you get to the step of straining your seeds.

so what you do is you get a bowl of your seeds, and you start to crush them individually with the pliers as the initial step. this may take a while, maybe watch some Futurama or something while you're engaged in this activity. you want to crush them in such a way that the husks are fragmented but in relatively large pieces so that they won't fit through the strainer. that's pretty much how it happens as long as they're not too dry or you grind them too hard. i presume.

when you've finished this preliminary step, place a few seeds at a time in your mortar and pestle, or a similarly effective grinding device, and begin to grind in a circular motion probably so as to shake loose as much of the lighter colored innards as possible. watch out for potential projectiles. eventually you'll have a bunch of pretty much powdered 'good stuff' and the husks should remain largely intact in their fragmented form.

then you want to put a small amount of this semi ground stuff in your tea semi-sphere at a time and coax the finer particles through the mesh with your rounded blunt knife-like thing. once most of the powder seems to have gone through you'll see that it's almost completely yellowish. so dump out what remains in the strainer into an empty bowl and continue until you've processed all of your partially ground seeds.

this method will likely waste some of the good stuff, you can take run what's left over through the mortar and pestle process again and proceed with the straining and such, just make sure that not too much of the husk starts passing through the tea strainer.

then you may fill your seed innards into some gel capsules with a folded piece of paper, and another flat one to catch what might spill, (sorry this is how i learned to write instructions in the second grade. they made me describe every damn step of how to make a peanut and butter sandwich. that's not actually very relevant. nevermind.)

yeah then swallow them whenever you feel like it. you may still have a little nausea. for me it wasn't that bad, it went away pretty quickly and i had some prophylactic ginger tea as well but i'm not sure that it was necessary.

hope this has been helpful. i've read about peoples perceptions that de-husking morning glory seeds is a formidable task. this method has worked very well for me.

peace dude bros. and women too of course. <3

Thank you for this information. Let me ask you. Are you serious about the aliens or are you just playin around? It's a legit question.

Also, I want to get your instructions straight. Are you saying that just *partially* crushing the seeds with pliers will make taking the fuzzy layer off easier?

1. Soak
2. Let mostly dry
3. Partially crush
4. Put over strainer
5. Take off husks
6. grind thoroughly with mortar and pestle

??? (simplified instructions of course)

Morning glory husks are not fuzzy. They are thick and tough, which is why partially crushing will allow you to extract the seed flour (soft yellow nutmeat) from the husks.

IMO the husks don't necessarily cause more digestive trouble than any other high-fiber seed husk. And the best way to harvest MGS is to remove the seed pods from the plant while still green and moist, before the fibers in the husk cure into a hard shell. They are far easier to blend when green.

Another Way That Works

There is an even easier way, IMO. Sprout the seeds in a wet paper towel for a day or so. After this, when they are just slightly popping out of the husk, squeeze each seed between your thumb and forefinger and the inside will just slide out of the husk. Once you have the amount of seed sprouts you want, rinse the slime off with water and chow down. It's almost like eating a bowl of beans at this point.
