My cousin just called me up. He is on 200 mg Zoloft. He said it's in pill form with powder in the pill. How can he reduce that? he wants to reduce by 25mg every month or every 2 weeks. He has made up his mind about reducing it so please don't provide an unnecessary advice. Just explain the best way to reduce it since it's a pill with powder in it.

Yup. Tell him he can most likely do what he wants but that his doctor must know what he is doing and will give him a recommendation as to how to proceed.

he doesn't give a shit about his doctor he has made up his mind. I am just trying to help the guy so that he does it in the safest way possible.

the ONLY way to safely reduce a dose of a prescribed antidepressant is to do it under professional supervision.

also its not that hard to find out how to reduce the dose of a powdered substance....

i hope this will be the only answer youre getting here.

As a community, we ought to support one another. It's a right, and an obligation. Always feel that you can contact staff about issues like this - we, too, prefer to handle it promptly rather than let it melt into the fabric of our community. So, encouragement to "Report" offensive content in the future!

Sorry Vaya. I'm well.

Don't be sorry! I suggested it because it helps us as staff remove the content and deal with it appropriately more quickly when we're made aware sooner. We try to be everywhere at once, but not even the internet has afforded us such a luxury as of yet :D

Much love,

He should decrease his dosage gradually over time. While it's advisable he inform his doctor of his decision, doctors aren't always going to give the best advice.

If he is at 200mg per day, it's likely he is taking 100mg tablets. It would be advisable to take an entire month to two months to decrease his dosage before stopping it completely. I wouldn't decrease more than 50mg, while taking 1 to 2 weeks to stabilize with every step down.

I would also recommend that he go back to the doctor, and request Prozac instead for tapering. The reason being, it has a longer half life, and is less likely he will experience extremely unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as brain zaps. Zoloft has a much shorter half life, and is associated greater with brain zaps upon discontinuation.

Captain Heroin. Thank you for being the only reasonable person here and giving me the kind of advice I was looking for. I appreciate it dude.
But how does he reduce the powder in the pill? they are 100 mg pills so u are right about that. should he take out half the powder from the 100 mg pill to make it 50 mg?

You mean he has capsules with powder inside, right?

It would probably be a wise idea to get the doctor to prescribe a lower dosage.

Otherwise, yes, you could empty the capsule, and divide it into equal parts. You could then take it via a parachute (using a single ply of toilet paper to encapsulate the powder).

Awesome advice captain. Thanks once again. Is it ok if after he opens up the capsule and divides the parts that he puts some of it back in the capsule and swallows the capsule? any dangerous in that?

thanks sekio, i appreciate it. I will help my cousin with all the info that you and captain kindly provided.

No problem! Sekio is correct - he's a very smart person.

I'm glad that we could help your cousin out, and I wish the best for him.

If you know when he is going to taper off, if possible, keep an eye on him. Coming off of SSRI's, especially the ones with short half lives like Zoloft, can be especially hard.

At the very least, remind him that if he's having a hard time coping with the tapering process/withdrawal, that he can call you, or a hotline if necessary. :)

awesome captain, I will definitely let him know. We need more folks in this world like you who are willing to help out other people and make their lives better.
