How to clean impurities out of ketamine

I have recently acquired some K-50 ketamine. In liquid form it is an off white/yellow colour. Once evaporated it turns to a powder form with an off white/grey/yellow colour. There is a sparkle of crystal in their but with something else definitely apparent. So much so that it gives the impression of powder instead of crystal. When snorted it gives an initial boot, then turns a bit dopey, then progressively goes to a sick feeling. Especially in the stomach, being very nauseous ect. I read an old post stating that benzthonium chlorides and chlorbutanals are undesirables in ketamine. I wonder if this might be what is in mine? Are these the main impurities found in ketamine? And what would be the simplest way to remove them?

Hi welcome to Bluelight.

I kind of doubt that you could spot impurities by looking at it. But anyway...

The liquid ketamine preparations Ketalar and Ketaset contain benzethonium chloride, it should be soluble in chloroform and ether while ketamine is not. Cold alcohol may also be an option. As ethanol seems to be better for that than methanol, isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) may be yet better... and it doesn't have the problem of taxes ethanol has.

Benzethonium shouldn't be at a concentration at over 0.1 mg/ml... so I doubt that you are seeing that.

You received liquid K in an unmarked unsterile vial?.. By K-50 you mean 50 mg/ml?

ID threads are not really allowed by the way, this might be turning into one.

If you don't have any idea what the impurity is and you lack the analytical equipment to find out, we can't help you.

Try recrystallization from boiling water, ketamine HCl actually recrysts quite nicely.
