I think there's a good chance that a kit I just bought from a friend has gone bad but I'm not sure. I tested a pill before that after consuming seemed like pretty clean mdma, but in testing the pill the solution went straight pinkish red, only small chunks of pill would turn purple.

Also I just picked up a batch of pills which are supposedly all quite clean ( the blue stars). Upon testing nothing happened for a sec or 2, then the solution went brown and took 30 secs or so to go blackish purple. Now everyone says these are damn good so I'm curious if my kit has shit the bed so to speak.

Is there any household item that can be tested to see if the pill is accurate at all? I don't want to rely on a shit kit that makes good pills look dangerous

that shit was happening to my marquis awhile back, i ordered a new one and tested the same pill, much better the next time around. sounds like it's just getting old, try testing some plain white cane sugar, it should smoke and turn brownish black, pretty quickly. if it doesnt then your kit's H2SO4 has oxidized too much. idk what else you could test it on.

Your kit was testing good pills brown? If so thats a relief. The reaction kind of bugged me out a bit even though I pretty sure the pills are good. Thanks for the idea, I'll get some cane sugar and see what happens.

Of course the person who sold it to me told me it worked just fine, but they haven't used it in 3 or 4 months and they probaly left it somewhere in the heat or something.

Well I tested my kit on some crushed up sugar cubes and it stayed the same color for about 40 secs before turning brown. Also it only turned brown around the bigger clusters of sugar.

Using sugar to indicate degree of polymerisation that occurs with Marquis over time is not a good test. What happens in aged Marquis is that the formaldehyde polymerises, producing a yellow then brown colour. The conc of the sulphuric acid is left close to what it was originally, and it is this that reacts with the sugar.

Without pure samples as references, appearance is the best guide.

I suggest using known OTC compounds to evaluate Reagents. Pseudoephedrine and Phenylephrine are both OTC secondary amines, so it will react with Simons. Codeine phosphate (available via CWE) turns: Marquis, brown-->purple; Mecke, light green-->blue green and Mandelin, olive green. Many amino acids contain a primary amine and should give a positive with primary amine tests (e.g. Robadope)
