OP, I don't know you very well, but here's my opinion on the subject of intermittent use of opioids. You've used opioids already and for that matter it appears that you really enjoy them. Even if you aren't yet physically dependent, the thought of using opioids is taking up enough space in your mind to indicate addiction or compulsion. You aren't really trying to find a way to use safely/responsibly, you are trying to find a way to use opioids for the rest of your life. I had the same mentality when I first started with Heroin; that I might be different than anyone else and use responsibly. I was wrong, obviously.
So, given the fact that you have already used and love opioids, chipping isn't a realistic outcome to your continued use. If not becoming addicted or dependent is truly your top priority, then you wouldn't be using at at all. This comment isn't judgmental in any way, I just feel like we all have gone through this phase (opioid addicts that is) and 99% have failed. There is a possibility that you could use opioids safely and chronically, but statistics have shown time and again that this rarely happens. The progression to full-on psychological and physical dependence creeps up on you. One more line/shot because you had a bad day, because you want to party, because your girlfriend left etc.
I just don't think chipping is realistic for most opioid users.
