How serious should life be?

But how seriously should we take this whole thing?

That depends. You are definitely on to something. Remembering not to take life so seriously(especially if you are highly prone to doing so) is a application that can be used in many areas of life but may not apply to other aspects.

In the case of something your serious and passionate about(when your not taking life seriously) like a career, relationship, sport or craft I find it best to be a bit proactive and focused. If this is something you feel should be taken seriously.
However having unrealistic expectations and/or not being able to move forward with your life after loss or defeat(even of pride or health) could be detrimental. Therefore it is necessary to be more light spirited.

If we don't take Life seriously I don't think we will have to wonder about which direction is the right direction or if we are doing this whole thing right.
You sound as if you are using this as a precautionary sort of principle. Whats important is which road or direction is right for you.

I've come to accept that in my baseline state, I'm a pretty serious person. I don't hold others to this same standard, though -- I respect people who can take all of life as a lark, so long as this doesn't lead to them justifying screwing other people over.

This is pretty much directly pasted from another user on another forum, but I felt it was perfectly applicable here. It concerns a Bill Hicks quote:

"The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think that it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly coloured, and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question - is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us. They say 'Hey! Don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride.' And we...kill those people."

joke about everything. nothing is more funny than cutting and critical social commentary said in a creative way.

Life is the most important thing we possess, and the only certain thing other than death. IMO, there should be some level of seriousness to it. But everyone is different

we take life seriously as a safe guard against our far out "stoned-ape" thoughts. ie suicide over a lost job or wife or our neolithic ancestors who thought it would be funny to poke the saber tooth cat. i say life is all about enjoying it and having fun like fuck look at what we got. but there are times to take the party hat off i wouldn't like national leaders jocularly asking "hey wanna go to war with Iran or some shit". i love this question

Serious enough that you respect life around you and protect your own life, but not too serious where you are not enjoying life. Its better to live one great day than a thousand miserable days.

All this. ^
Laughing at the human condition is one of those things you forgettabout when psychedelics aren't around to keep the lighthearted mood.

BRAVO....... I wish Bill was still around (In the flesh)

totally unserious; the end product of everything we do is happiness, so why not enjoy your life

but when confronted with people who dont have this attitude, it's good to have a serious facade you can put on

Fake the attitude enough so you can save your own skin and go for another ride on the coaster.

There are no hard fast rules to how you should live your life. The ideal way to live varies from person to person, and day to day. I would guess that taking your life seriously to some extent is a good idea, because you should at least know what it is like so you can broaden your perspective. But, does broadening your perspective in that respect give you a richer world view? At times, life can be quite absurd, and seemingly without much meaning. But, I guess I'll let Nietzsche (yeah, how typical, I know) finish my thoughts for me: "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how."

I hope you have gotten some good answers on here (thesoundofmotion). Also I hope you find what your looking for. I know I posted a lenghty response earlier but right now, to be brief.... Don't take life that seriously. Just live well. We all arrive at the same place the same way in the end. :-)

I certainly don't take life seriously, and in the midst of this process, I notice most around me seem very stressed and wrapped up in insignificant events, people, places and things.

I have noticed this predisposition of mine to attract women that are just the opposite.

?

As one of the serious folks out there, I think it's worth pointing out that the reason we are so serious is not to be bogged down in sorrow. We do it because that's our path to happiness and satisfaction. The world needs both kinds of people, and opposites attract for a reason.
