My brother has expressed interest in smoking pot. I really don't want him to start at a young age, I did and things didn't turn out too great for me. I'm fine now, just kinda had to do some catching up in the maturity department.

I'm thinking 17 is a good time, or should I wait until he's 18? I figure he's gonna try it on his own before this, I just don't want to feel responsible for him becoming a fuck up.

When would you blaze jr out?

My little brother is 10 and shows an interest in drugs, drug culture more than the actual substances themselves. I've kept my use completely secret from all my family with the exception of a few cousins. I told my little brother the truth: that most of what he will be taught in school about drugs will be wrong and to do research on his own, not listening to idiotic friends, and to make his own decision about drugs. From there, i can do no more to keep him from drugs in an honest way. I think that 17-18 would be a "good" age to start if one is going to start at all. It's when i started, and i don't regret it at all.

i think the two biggest dangers marijuana poses for teenagers are stunted social skills and foregone education.

so i would say 16 - 18 for someone who has their shit together academically and maintains functional relationships with their peers. of course, even at that point, there's still a risk of total derailment.

i'm in total agreeance with that outlook.

i don't know about your relationship with your brother, but if i had started smoking pot with a responsible adult in my life (like my brother who's 4 years older than me) i have a feeling i wouldn't have gone so out of control with my use and getting expelled from high school, arrested, family issues etc. etc.

if i'd had somebody that i actually respected and looked to as a role model to tell me "hey dude, you're taking it a little too far. maybe you should concentrate more on [insert some priority, like schoolwork, here] instead of smoking bud all the time," i most definitely would have listened. unfortunately, though, i never knew what was "too far" until i was already in some pretty serious kinds of trouble (for a teenager, at least).

weigh the pros and cons, then make your decision. though if you're brother's like 12 i'd try to steer him clear of drugs and maybe tell him that if he stays clean he'll have something awesome to look forward to for his 16th, 17th, or 18th birthday. (i.e. you'll get him extremely fuuuuuuuuuuuucked up)

One's lungs are not completely developed until around age 21. I would not encourage my teenger to binge-toke, although I find cannabis to be relatively harmless. No other drugs at all outside of psychedelics (this includes tobacco and alcohol).

i did horrible in highschool..then i went to college and started smoking bud and i could actually pass my classes because i was more focused. not everyone reacts the same to cannabis.

bad memory and social skills has more to do with poor diet and existing social dysfunction that sometimes leads people to smoke bud in the first place.

i got smoked out on many blunts by older influences a lil before 13years old & although id hit up school warm, burned & comforted it totally did not help on an academic level.

Agreed.

I was 15 when I started but I was very mature, had many friends/hobbies/interests, and was an excellent student and I would only smoke once a month/a few times a year and I never got heavily into weekend/daily smoking until I was an adult.

YMMV.

i think my little sister was 14-15 when she first got high. then she started smoking more than i did. she's in her senior year of high school, almost didn't graduate. doesn't plan on going to college. though, i'm not sure if marijuana played a part in that because she was never the "school type"

i think it mostly depends on the persons maturity level.

It depends on the individual, their environment and life situation. I think waiting until you're 18 would be a good general rule of thumb, but young people are always impatient, me included. I started smoking pot (not too often back then) when I was around 17 and don't regret a single puff though. It probably saved me from alcoholism anyway, which I consider a very positive thing.

Age in years, months or days isn't the best way of measuring maturity, some people mature faster than others, some are slower. It gives you a very good hint though. It's like that for all living things I guess.

But it's not all about maturity either, I believe life experience in general matters too, and that comes only with time. Also, here where I live (scandinavia), the parents might have their child taken to custody by some social security assholes if under 18 drug use is discovered, so I would keep things like that in mind too when thinking of getting minors high.

i think it should all go back to maturity and the mindset of the fella.
if the kid is 14 with the mind and maturity of an 18 year old (granted this isnt all too common) then i think that it would be fine to "smoke jr. out".

a physical age shouldn't mean as much as an internal age.

Everyone is pretty much hitting the nail on the head, Its all about how mature they are mentally. That said, 17-18 seems like a pretty good age to give it a try. I think one can really appreciate weed for all of its benefits as you get older. It seems like the younger the person is the more likely they are to be trying it for other reasons; their friends doing it, it being "cool", to get fucked up, etc.

Probably when drugs start coming into play...roughly middle school when they throw more of that anti drug bullshit at you and you start to see people using more. At least I did. So probably 14 and up. Whenever you think they're mature enough to understand. When my little brother gets a bit older I plan on having the talk with him as well.

I really started smoking heavily my Senior year in HS. It fucked up my grades, couldn't walk because I had a 1.9 GPA. Had to go to summer school for 3 weeks until I got my Diploma. Just don't let it take over his life. Skipping School for weed is lame as fuck.
