I know it's not that serious but I don't want to get a dependence. Diphenhydramine withdrawal is pretty bad I hear. Horrible allergies and you can't get a wink of sleep for 1-3 days.

Just wondering how long I can take diphenhydramine before I need to take a break so I don't develop any issues

ty :\

I don't want to get a dependence. Diphenhydramine withdrawal is pretty bad I hear.

^^Uh...wha??? Where did you hear this?

Diphenhydramine does have recreational value, but the dose that one would take to induce sedation and aid in sleep should be drastically lower than the dose one would take for recreational purposes. I think it's safe to say that you can use Diphenhydramine as directed and as needed :)

I take diphenhydramine pretty regularly for sleep, for the past 5 or 6 months and on nights that I don't take it I don't notice any sort of w.d or sleeplessness.

I don't know whether I'm just unique or are the w.d really not that bad?

Personally I'm more worried of all the acetaminophen that's in the excedrin pm's I'm taking

Diphenhydramine withdrawals aren't something I've ever heard of or experienced. If used as directed for sleep purposes (25-50mg before bedtime...usually 20-30 minutes before bedtime) it is an effective sleep aid. While tolerance to the sedative effects will eventually develop, there is no withdrawal syndrome.

Are there any other sources for diphenhydramine other than benadryl and Tylenol pm's?

The reason I'm asking is because the benadryl releases the diphenhydramine too slow to make me tired, and I'd rather not take the Tylenol PM due to all the acetaminophen

You can take it as often as you'd like. There are no (as far as we know) negative long term effects from using the drug and it has zero dependence liability.

I am closing this thread as it really has no HR value nor will it lead to productive discussion. Diphenhydramine is a very safe drug when taken in doses not exceeding 100 mg at once.
