Mental Health How Mental Illness Derailed the Career of a Promising Young Skateboarder

i found it interesting, having been institutionalised as well, he seems like a really lovely soul.

i think he was stuck in there for 6 months or something the first time? horrifying..

Four months from what I gathered, and put on Haldol. I knew that stuff was bad but I didn't realize it fucked you up so much you could barely walk.

My mate got psychosis from smoking weed. The people who got him hooked on the stuff fucked him off as a friend when they found out. Some people in this world need to acknowledge mental health for what it is.

Yeah... I think all of the weed the guy was smoking in the vid most likely triggered or at least exacerbated his underlying condition. I have nothing against weed but I think people that are predisposed to mental illness should be extremely careful with it or just avoid it altogether.

This was the position I used to hold, now I'm not so sure it is accurate enough.. it seems more convenient to label individuals or the "predisposed" than to acknowledge that cannabis might not actually be as safe/soft as it has been made out to be. Everyone knows someone who's gone off the rails and usually weed was in the picture somewhere.

The situation with his girlfriend was a highly emotional event.. I suspect he would have been fine with that (eventually) had he not been smoking.

It's hard to say really. Probably a combination of things. I personally don't know anyone who's ever "gone off the rails" from weed, but I do agree that a lot of people downplay the potential side effects. I think especially since a lot of strains are so strong now it can lead to unpleasant experiences in some people. It also baffles me on how even nowadays a lot of people don't even recognize it as a psychedelic (which it is).

I think people with certain mental illnesses are just naturally drawn to certain drugs. I remember when i was 12 or 13 years old and suffering from major suicidal depression (or bipolar depression whatever) and when i discovered Codeine and Demerol i thought i was in heaven because i no longer felt miserable. Too bad that didn't last long and over a decade later i became addicted to much stronger opiates.

I have been smoking Cannabis since i was 11 and taking shrooms since i was 13 i think and never suffered any consequences from either. I still smoke weed/Hash almost daily and if anything it keeps me calm. Shrooms and LSD also had a sort of anti-depressant effect on me that tends to last weeks after the trip. I guess it all has to do with how you react to it. I never found even the strongest strains of Cannabis to be psychedelic if anything it feels like a sedative. I've never seen anyone loose the plot on weed before either.

He had some really traumatic shit happen to him, and he was using drugs at the time. I think even weed can cause that to take a turn.

People underestimate the psychological and deep, subconscious impacts of drugs. They have an entheogenic component which can insert things deep, deep into your consciousness -- even weed. So imagine going through a severe relationship trauma while you're high all the time. What hypnotic effect would that have on the mind? When I occasionally get high, I can't even be out in public anymore. It opens me up way too much.

Poor guy. I was only in the hospital for a couple months, and not in the psych ward. Can only imagine what 6 months in psych would do to a person.

^ Yeah again it comes down to how you react to it. I remember during a bad breakup i was smoking about 3 1/8th's a week to try to remain sane. Too bad i had to discover IV coke and alcohol all over again and go right off the rails for a few months but Cannabis has always just relaxed me. The first time i quit drinking smoking hash and Weed really helped me keep my mind off the booze and it has a sort of mood stabilizing effect on me. So as with anything else it comes down to the individuals reaction to it really. What may work for me may not do anything or even make another person worse.

Psych meds are also a good example of this. Taking Mirtazapine while i was on Risperdal nearly caused me to hang myself yet Mirtazapine does sometimes help peoples Depression when alot of drugs fail. So it all comes down to the person really.

Depends on what your definition of healthy is I guess. I know plenty of people who are functional and tax paying citizens.. alcohol and cannabis mainly. They haven't gone off the rails. But to suggest they are anywhere near the same calibre of individual they would be without the substances is dishonest.. they are merely able to hide their inward dysfunction, unlike those who lose it and display it outwardly.

This is great example of a social and cultural issue that gets overlooked and destroys many lives. A similar thing happened to me so I can really relate to this. From the research I've done it's clear that some people are predisposed to mental health issues such as schizophrenia and schizo affective if they smoke weed. Some people are also predisposed towards addiction.
I live in the UK and understand the problem and have seen the weed game develop from the sput and black days. When bud was hard to come by. To the streets being flooded with potent cheese and lemon. A lot of the weed now is very thc heavy with no balance of cbd. Which as said above makes it more of a psychedelic and is why I think a lot of people lose the plot with it. Experience psychosis etc.
There's very little media coverage on the dangers of weed here. Maybe a documentary now and again. The one with John snow comes to mind. But not nearly enough done to educate the youth on exactly how dangerous it is.
One last thing about the treatment of people who get mental illness from weed.
Within the mental health services the professionals are far too quick to put the patient on anti-psychotics as a therapy. Although I agree in the short term for someone in crisis who has stopped eating or sleeping it's a must. This is not a long term solution though. I think they can be detrimental to your recover and certainly your health. There needs to be more funding for cbt, talking therapy, councilling and other means of help. Some research studies show that in countries that cannot afford the medicine used for these illnesses in fact the people suffering cope better than in developed countries.
There's another documentary you might want to check called All This Mayhem, on the skateboarders Tas and Ben Papa. It's incredible.
Peace.

All this Mayhem made me cry, but it's worth watching.
I saw it on Netflix a few months ago idk if it's still there but just putting that out there.
It's really incredible.
