Sorry i am not sure which thread or which section this question should be in but i live in Sydney and the scenario i am in is that i just found out that my specialist is on holidays for about a month and i would normally see him every 6 weeks and at this point i am out of medication. But i am not sure if my psychiatrist has sent my profile to my local GP. Any info about this would be great help.

should not take long at all, usually there a specialist sends a letter outlining what is happening with you treatment with the specialist. you GP should be able to provide you with scripts for ongoing treatment but it might not be an authority script (rebated under medicare) an would cost you more as a private script.

I would assume that your GP is still you main doctor being assisted by specialists (psychiatrist), he could well continue medication that has been already started but for a shorter period of time, unless there has been an agreement between the two docors.

there might be a stumbling block with informed consent to release info but i would doubt it as they are both your doctors, there may also be a holdup in the admin side of things.

Call yor GP and let him know you are out of meds, he should be able to call the specialists office, or at least get his admin to call the specialists admin to find out what is haqppening

When a doc goes away they always organise a replacement in the meantime so just call and organise an appointment.

Not always. My former psych packed up and went on a 3 month holiday without organising a replacement. Pretty shit when you only have half yearly appointments to pick up a script. If I didnt go to my GP and get referred to a new psych i would have been without meds for 2 months. Bloody irresponsible if you ask me...particularly as some patients of his could have been a danger to themselves or the community if left unmedicated for too long.

Yeh anyway my post does have a point. If your GP cant legally prescribe the medication you need (e.g. authority script or what not) then ask for a referral to a new psych. Organise with the new psychiatrist to have your records transferred over from your current psych BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT. Then you should be able to get your meds on your first appointment no dramas.

Call them up and tell the secretary it is her sole job to sort it out for you that day or you'll have their job lol. I'm sure they could call him or someone to organise getting proof of it to your doctor.

In my experience GP's can and do authorise 'Authority scripts'

Really??? My GP told me he couldn't legally write me my prescription. Something about needing be registered with the Health Department as being an authorised prescriber. This was in relation to dexies tho. It might be different for opioids...for which GP's have a genuine need to prescribe. Pretty sure that in WA a GP cannot make a diagnosis of ADHD so therefore does not have the authority to write a script for dexies. Guess it depends on what state you are in as well.

Stupid laws. Sometimes I could go back to the early 1960's "self medicate" with Dexamyl or Black Beauties. Sighhhhh. =D

Yeah but if you've already been diagnosed and had the scripts written in the past they should be able to call up and get the authority from someone else I thought. When I've had authority scripts the doc had to call a number and lodge it first so that they have some sort of record.

Arhhh i see, my only authority scripts have come in either mirtazipine, some benzo's and a repeat of oxycontin.

funny thing happened today with my gp... i went in for a refill for oxycontin and he tried calling Canberra to make the authorisation but no one answered... apparently their severs were down today, so he write the authority script for 90 oxycodone's and told me that if there was a problem at the chemist, get them to call me... sure enough the pharmacist called my doctor and it was all good... i asked the pharmacist and she told me about the sever problem and that it would be done when they were back on, but i still got my very generous script=D
