How long do Prozac and Tramadol stay in the body?

I've taken myself off my 10mg/daily dose of Fluoxetine/Prozac about a week ago, i understand it may be in my system, but how long?
Can this affect dosages of Tramadol since it has SSRI effects? I felt shitty taking 100mg tramadol the other day and i'm concerned that my ssri is still in my body affecting it, thanks
sorry for poor english

I believe about 2 weeks should be enough to avoid serotonin syndrome but you may experience discontinuation syndrome from the Prozac, in some form for months.

If you are prescribed the Tramadol you may be better off with Morphine XR.

I see, but can I safely take a 50mg capsule of Tramadol for pain relief? Or does the SSRI still being in my body affect it somehow?

I would not, there is a small but real chance that you could suffer serotonin syndrome as Tramadol if a weak SSRI as well as an SNRI.

Tramadol also lowers the seizure threshold and this combination may lead to problems there as well, if you must then I would stick to the 50mg for a good while.

Serotonin Syndrome is rare but can be life threatening, here's a wiki link:-

Take care:)

Well i never been on Prozac, but my experience with like meds, 2-3 weeks is normal. Tramadol was useless in my opinion, and as i understand has ssri qualities and could effect your coming off of prozac. if your in depresion or have a history of seizures, i would ask a friend to keep an eye on you, if you must mix.

Cheech and Chong may hit my bong, but splifs and blunts complete me:)

I felt anxious and jittery, not calmed out, traditional opiate/opioid effects. it was strange.

yes, i know SS can be life-threatening, but in doses of 10mg prozac at LEAST a week ago, and 1-2 capsules of 50mg tramadol, i imagine i will make it through the experience alive, come on, this ain't no speedball. but i will take your advice and wait another week to ensure prozac gone from my body

I agree the risk seems to be low, SS seems to be an odd one with many people ignoring the risk altogether and taking MDMA whilst on SSRIs which must be one of the worst combinations.

My view, and I'm on an SNRI so recently could not have Tramodal and had to take Morphine XR instead is that there is a risk :-

It can be life threatening

The reaction is unpredictable.

In short you have to ask yourself, is this worth the risk , in this scenario I would exercise caution you may come to a different conclusion.

The effects of Prozac and Tramadol will last for 4-6 hours. But, as far as I know, the drug will stay in the body for about 4-8 hours depending on your excretory process. Mostly, it comes out in our body through urination and fecal elimination.

<Mod note: This is not all all correct. Please do some research before posting potentially dangerous info. See my post below.>

I used to type something into google and google itself would tell me the half-life, how long till 99% of it is eliminated, etc..

Can't remember what i typed now.. it was something like fluoxetine elimination but that's not working..

Anyone know?

The affects of prozac last A LOT longer than 4 - 6 hours?

I also felt "shitty" when i used tramadol at the same time I was on venlafaxine 150 mgs. Before and after that I always had good effects from tramadol, but it just doesn't seem to mix up good with SSRI/SNRI:s.

I'm not sure about how long the substance might be present in your body but in this case it's irrelevant. The ongoing SSRI action is really what we need to consider and that lasts much longer.

^ Yeah, the serotonin reuptake is inhibited right from the start and ends when the medicine leaves the body. However, nobody knows why SSRI's take weeks to have an effect (if even then) although the serotonin levels increase instantly.

^ Could be due to their affect on promoting neurogensis in the hippocampus.. it takes about a month to make noticable difference..

And it's been observed that a low density of neurons in the hippocampus is associated with depression.

If that is the sole reason then people should stop taking SSRI's 2 - 3 months after starting.

Thankyou, you learn something new everyday:)

This is not correct at all.

Prozac has an average elimination half-life of 4-6 days. That means that 87% would be out of the body at around 12-18 days. Of course it varies from person to person and can be longer if you have taken Prozac long-term. One doctor I know suggests waiting 4-6 weeks before taking any serotonergic drugs after being on Prozac.

Tramadol has an average half-life of 6-7 hrs. That means 87% should be out of the body at around 18-21 hrs.

I just read a case report of a person who had been on Prozac getting serious serotonin syndrome when taking 100mg tramadol, so it is definitely possible. She did recover but only after over a week of suffering.

OP - Yes, the Prozac could be affecting the tramadol. Please speak with your doctor before taking more. You may want to consider switching to another opioid that does not have serotonergic effects.
