this link is a newsweek quiz i took last week (scored in the 'B' range): http://specials.newsweek.com/surveys/health-self-assessment-quiz/intro/

...not that i really care how newsweek measures health or think it's 'right,' but it got me thinking...how does each individual measure his/her own health? and why don't we make the obvious changes we should to improve our health drastically (eg, not smoke)?

fwiw, i would probably give myself a B in terms of health anyway (woohoo newsweek.) i'm 21, 5'8" female, a bit less than 120 pounds, exercise 3 hours a day, six days a week, but i smoke, drink, and drug pretty heavily.

from what i remember, there isn't anything in the newsweek quiz about psychological health, spiritual health, etc....very descartian....i figured BLers would have some more creative, nuanced, and multi-faceted ways of operationalizing and 'measuring' health.

So right now, no idea where I stand, I'm a really good athlete, but you never really know what's going on inside.

Are you happy and completely satisfied with your life right now? If in the future you will not be able to keep up with the schedule and standards you have set for yourself now, how would you cope with that? Just curious.

im going to give myself D. i smoke, drink, neglect exercise, and am actually sick with the flu. but i usually eat healthy and meditate on a normal basis. yea i didnt take the test, i took my own. =D

body mass index means jack shit. my body mass index would put me near obese but I'm below 10% body fat.

test is pretty inaccurate.

I never exercise, I party heavily, I sleep a lot and then go for 24 hours without sleeping...Oh yeah, and I eat McDonald's all the time.

But, I weigh about 118-120 pounds being 5'8". I look like I work out all the time. I have very good, natural muscle tone. And I never get sick! I've been told I can gain a few pounds though. I regulary go to the doctor and everything is working properly, if not better than most. ;p

You can appear healthy and on the outside have the body of a skinny in-shape person, but on the inside, have the body of obese person. A large portion depends on your diet and genetic factors. It's possible to have fatty tissue clogging your arteries despite an outwardly robust appearance, so keep in mind that being lean is not necessarily an indication of good health.

Edit: Got an A, with 245. Don't eat enough fruits and vegetables, cover up enough in the sun, and the driving one.

I'm not sure.

I'm skinny, trying to quit smoking (doing pretty good), drink daily as well as have a few puffs of weed. I'm skinny as hell though, like too skinny. I got a C

B :D It should have asked if you smoke not "do you smoke TOBACCO"

I got a C. My score was 110.

I fail to see how wearing a seatbelt or traveling with a drug/drunk driver can be factored into a general wellbeing test:|

Of course, if you crash you might get hurt or decapitated or something but that is beside the point . . . .

Your wellness is aided by wearing a seat and making wise choices about where you are placing your body. Out of harm's way.

I got a B. Basically I had positive answers on most except for those asking if I've seen a doc in the past year and wear sunscreen.

I smoke, drink, and eat to much junkfood, otherwise's I'm
in great shape :)

damn you exercise 3 hours a day. hardcore.

well i got a C and im surprised cuz I thought I was a little more healthy than average. but according to newsweek, i should stop drinking so much, exercise more, and . . . lol. . . not get into a car with an impaired driver.

exercise is my main problem cuz i always feel like im too busy to do it. so i only exercise like one day a week. its hard to force myself to squeeze it into my day.

I would guess that my health if probably average. I'm about 30 lbs overweight and I suffer from mild hypertension. But I do lot of aerobic exercise and eat more than the recommended amounts of fruit and veg, plus I avoid red meat. I'm also getting my blood pressure treated with medication; it hasn't be controlled yet, but I am optimistic that the doctors will eventually find a combination of drugs that will get it back down to healthy levels.

I have a lot of stamina and don't suffer from gum disease or have high cholesterol, so I'm probably slightly ahead, especially because I'm acknowledging that I have some problems and am taking steps to improve my health.

I have the sort of constitution whereby if I do the right things I will be healthy but if I fuck up, I'll end up with lots of problems further down the line... I suppose this year has been a wake-up call for me, as I'm 42 and getting to the point where I know I can't take anything for granted anymore.

I got a C and I don't agree, I should probably have a B. It said that I was overweight. I am 6 feet 1, 200 pounds, and theres some fat but mostly muscle from working out, I have a good built frame.

Bogus.

About 25 lbs overweight. Need more upper body strength.I have very toned legs , there strong...... but my upper arm strength and my chest needs to be toned bad. I need to lose 25 lbs of fat and gain a minimum of 5 lbs of muscle. I need to start running or at least jogging because I only walk. And although its everyday and a good amount, its not enough. My diet needs to be changed slightly, just slightly smaller portions, less carbs, and more veggies. I'll be alright. Damn anti-depressants ands methadone added 70 pounds to me. And then I lost 20 of it. I attribute most of the weight gain to these medications....they are known side effects and it just happened so fucking quick.
