As Visualvalium says, some migraine relief medications contain ergot, presumably because it modifies blood flow and lessens pressure in the brain (any chemists out there correct me or confirm). Ergotamine Tartrate is the precursor for at least one tek - the original hoffman one I think.

Interesting article, but far from unanimous. I don't believe they'll ever unlock all the secrets. They just weren't meant to be found, at least i like to think so

Well... you'll be content to know that the limitations of human perception allow us to never truly know . Light is a great example of this. We see such a limited spectrum yet it all effects us. Things are so complex and integrated that we can never know the causality of everything at once. We're gears ourselves. We're nature. Back to knowing though. Human thinking is binary at a fundamental level. If not this, then this. If you looked at one thing without anything sort of reference you could understand what it is. You can only analyze something in contrast to what your brain has experienced and is programmed to do no matter how unbiased you want to be. Therefore it is impossible to accurately analyze yourself. I am not saying someone else can do it better though. All I'm saying is when someone says something is so incredibly True and certain that there is a lot of faith behind that statement. People cannot know themselves, a part of the Universe with which they are intimately acquainted; it would seem arrogant to say we can ever know everything about a particular topic. I suppose Science does have time on its' side though. What we "know" now is concepts that generally have reproducible, predictable consequences. Whether this knowledge is True in a Universal sense can also never be known. We just have to accept that our knowledge is limited and go on we "know" in the system we think we live in.

Doesn't mean that we might not be able to create a different way of thinking though - some philosophers have been working pretty hard on this one - esp. Deleuze and his psychiatrist colleague Guattari (both sadly dead now - but others will take up the cudgel). We may be able to learn different ways of thinking which will allow us to extend our awareness.

I think they mean similar as in they also affect the serotonin receptor, like SSRI's. Maybe amphetamine.

I'm talking about totality. The fact that people need to realize we can only see a small part and not act as if their understanding is infallible. I also didn't imply that there was only one way to understand. Just that human capability is limited by our biology.

I'm more than a bit outraged at the cost of a journal subscription and feel that knowledge should be offered freely in most cases. If they want to sue me, so be it, but I doubt that'll happen.
