How long does it take to become psysically addicted to heroin? 1 week? 1 month?
I have read information (linked to erowid I believe) which suggested it is possible to sustain IV heroin use for around 3 months before becoming psysically addicted. Perhaps this is wishful thinking on behalf of the author, how possible is this?

Being a past user myself, from my perspective
I say about 14 days of continuous usage is going to produce physiological addiction. However, the circumstance here was a steady use of once a week, to twice a week, to every second day, and so on. And I am also talking a movement from smoking to intravenous use. If you need some advice some elaboration on the above, enchanted, email me

I would be happy to help

Thanks for replying Comarose. I had an arguement about it with someone at Tafe who was adamant a week = instant addiction... Personally I know a couple of people who use heroin on weekends and have never shown anyn sign of addiction, psysical or otherwise.

i think it would have alot to do with the persons personality too...as in if they have an addictive personality, what age they started using, etc...
Someone i used to be good friends with(and has used for about 5 years

)once said to me...
1 time is too many; 1000 times is never enough
some people that inject also get addicted to the actual injection too...the ritual of cooking, and feeling the substance in their vein...in the extreme, i've seen people inject saline solution, just to feel something in their vein. BUt that's extreme.
anyway, only my 0.02c worth. I mean no generalisations here too, just some of my experience with people and heroin addiction.

this is a really interesting post.
I can't wait to here other peoples responses!
This is a topic that is rarely covered in here.

I used to work with a woman and her daughter and as I left the company I discovered that this woman's eldest daughter, youngest daughter and her son were all heroin addicts. (All Injecting it too). I would suggest that this means that it is easy to become addicted to heroin. I spoke to her daughter one day about her brothers addiction (I didn't realise at the time she was an addict too) and she told me that he said the first time he shot it up that was the end for him. He said that there was no way that his body could feel that way through any other means. Last I heard they were considering taking him to Israil (I think thats where it is) where they actually pump all your blood out of your body and fill it with clean blood.
Thats just what I have heard about heroin..my $0.20 worth for this discussion

"where they actually pump all your blood out of your body and fill it with clean blood"
- now that sounds like an effective cure.... like when your mum used to threaten to wash your mouth out with soap if you swore...
"one more hit son and i'll cart you off to israel to have your blood drained again!!"

It's very hard to look at psysical addiction because it usually begins with psychological addiction ~ you don't keep using if you don't enjoy it. So I suppose this is hard to answer because some people aren't concerned with the consequences of thier drug use and others are.
What I want to know is: If someone uses smack steadily for a week what withdrawals, if any are they going to suffer?
N.B: incase anyone thinks I am comtemplating this I am not, I have already tried heroin and didn't get a lot out of it, maybe because I smoked it, but I didn't feel any inclination to duplicate the experiance.

a perspective....
A friend took it 'recreationally' (2/3 times a month) for 3 years - no problems whatsoever with increasing use or visible addiction possible.
During what could be described as a 'bad patch' he took it daily for 13 days straight (excuse pun) and developed a serious addiction for 12 months. Thankfully (through Naltrexone) is now totally clean from H for 8 months.
In hindsight, he said it was a 'psyche' thing initially- took it often to escape feeling like sh*te, then the physical addiction part took over and down went the spiral and felt like sh*ite for the rest of the year natch!
He does still party, but knows now (learned the hard way) that theres one thing that can get on top of him...and is terrified of it as a result.
Everybodys different of course but my 2c? Dont try it in the first place....

just another towel to be thrown in with the rest of the wash...
was a house party last weekend and the topic came up, a friend (who has partied quite heavily for the last 10 years) said that him and 7 others decided they'd all try snorting it one day.
Out of that 8 there was only him and one other that didn't develop a heroin addiction problem.
*cue twighlight zone music*
Mind you they were all pretty big party animals that (ab)used their substances much more than I do

Tip 1: Never try the stuff
Tip 2: Sorry dude I just had to point out that I think you mean physical (like the milk

)
Tip 3: Did I mention never touch the stuff?
Just my $0.02
Sorry that this post is not that enlightening, its just that heroin destroys too many lives and I would have to say that it is number one on my 'just say no' drug list (it may also be the only one).
Proceed with the question answering anyone with details....

Munchee, just had to say..alcohol destroys many lives too..yet that's legal.
Interesting post - I can imagine if I ever tried Heroin (which I don't think would ever happen) I would be the sort to be instantly addicted....I have a very addictive nature!

Did naltrexone work 1st time with your friend Iggymon? I have read conflicting viewpoints as to it's effectiveness. Does anyone else here have experience with methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone?
Thanks for everyone's opinions. I'd be very appriciative of some good links too.

It's okay I'm not totally ignorant on the topic of heroin use and addiction. I actually read a really good article ages ago about the statistics of professionals that use heroin regularly but control their use and suffer no addiction (although that was questioned in the article also because few of the ones using it had stopped for any great period of time).
Alcohol of course is going to destroy more lives because it is much more commonly abused and is cheap and accessable. Another interesting statistic is the one of car accidents caused by drugs other than alcohol, one thing that is not ususally in media releases.
I'm not going to stick up for any drugs here though because all have their obvious downfalls. Simple message control use of any substance and it should not be a great problem.

Yes the naltrexone did work for him.
Most situations that I've come across is 'Yeah it worked, I'm on my 3rd Naltrexone program' so.....take that as u will....
This one friend in particular was hell bent (pardon pun) on getting off it. The Nal he said gave that extra push he needed. He'd been on buprenorphine 2 times before to get off and he said it just didnt work for him.
Not sure about him on methadone but to me it 'appears' to do more harm than good. I dont think I've met one person on 'done who hasnt gone back to H. :-/

Im reading these story's abotu people using 2/3 times a month for years on end and thinking - *that* is actually eqivelent addiction.
I also dont still understand why people continue to use a drug that causes so much pain.

I have seen a study into physical addictions and it showed that some people are physically more likely to become more addicted then others. Had to do with the structure of their brains, number/nature of receptors or something like that.
The study also found that chronic addiction could not be cured, only lessened to a managable level.
