How Does Zoloft Affect You(If You're On It Or Have Been On It)?

i was recently(a little more than a couple of weeks ago) Rx'ed Zoloft for obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and depression. i'm starting to feel like there is a filter on my brain only letting the happy thoughts through and people have noticed a change in my behavior(acting overly happy and "off"). i have also felt a strange fuzzy feeling and bizzare, vivid dreams(although i looked that up and its somewhat normal).

anyway my question is if you're on or you've been on Zoloft, how did it affect you?

another question- how is Zoloft compared to other SSRIs?

This isn't answering your question, but i was prescribed an SSRI today and i'm worried about the sexual side effects. have you noticed any with your zoloft?

StaySedated, I was on 100mg of Zoloft for about 8 months before being switched to Wellbutrin XL because of weight gain. Had I not gained weight, I would have stayed on it because it was the only SSRI I could tolerate (so for me it was the SSRI with the least amount of adverse side effects). I've also been on Prozac, Paxil and Celexa. Also, I can honestly say it is effective for depression but it takes a few weeks to work and when it does begin to work, the effects are very subtle (meaning that you might not notice that your attitude has changed but others will notice around you).

Lucifer666, when I was on 100mg of Zoloft daily, it was more difficult for me to achieve/maintain an erection and also blow my load but it wasn't impossible. It just took longer. From what I've read, Zoloft is sometimes prescribed off label for premature ejaculation.

To ro4eva. Weight gain is another thing that concerns me. I weight lift everyday and am trying to put on muscle and stay lean. Did you gain weight simply because you ate more, or did the drug itself cause weight gain, as in a slowed metabolism.

Yea heads up I gained 50 pounds in 6 months from this pill I was on it for depression it works don't get me wrong but the weight gain isn't worth it in my opinion

I took some several anti depressants with alcohol, so I can list several of the side effects:

Stomach pains are evident after first couple uses, but tend to go away with time

Amphetamine like feeling- I slept in intervals of two hours a day for a couple days

Weight gain is possible, mostly due to elevated mood:

If you feel euphoria on these pills, you are most likely taking too high of a dose to start with. The first couple times one gets high off a new drug they feel euphoria the next day or two- this will usually go away as erowid suggests one may have a limited number of "great highs" in their life time.

honestly man, not a fan of zoloft. consider luvox, more suited towards OCD, thats why im on it. It really is up to you to break those bonds in your head causing the ocd, and i know its not as easy as said as im still struggling. Inositol seemed to help a bit.

Was on it for about 2-3 months about a year ago. Started with 100mg and I think bumped it up to a higher dosage about halfway thru the time i was taking it

overall I had no effects from it at all. no anxiety relief, no help sleeping, no weight gain, no change in mood... just nothing..

worthless imo, but thats just me.

I was on 200-300mg Zoloft from ages 8-15, for severe depression and OCD. I think it made me extremely angry and psychotic. It also had the reves efect ofmaking me extremely depressed as well. So the doc just kept saying "we'll just up the dose". I really don't remember much from my childhood that isn't terrible memories. When I got off of it before my junior year when I was 16, I went fucking violently insane. Like, seriously. Stuff I can't put on a message board.

I can't be sure but I think it slowed my metabolism because I wasn't doing anything differently when I was taking it (and before taking it, I would never put on weight so easily). At the time, I also worked full time in construction (tiles & flooring) and would typically work 10-12 hour shifts and still put on weight. And I know a couple of people who went on the drug and put on massive amounts of weight and they were both very skinny.

Wikipedia says Zoloft is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, does this contribute to it's effects?

are other common SSRIs(Prozac, Lexipro, Paxil, etc) also DRIs?

Zoloft is a weak DRI, I think. SSRI is what it is considered, but each SSRI is different, and there are reasons for that. I wouldn't be surprised if its DRI effects contribute some to its efficacy.

Zoloft was a great AD for me. I had the sexual dysfunction and switched to Paxil 25 ER which I tolerate ok right now. This is the hightest dose that I can take. Anymore than that and I do have the sexual dysfuction.

These are serious meds, but depression is a serious issue. Excercise is the best treatment, imo, but if you need more, you need more.

also, to add: I've taken either Ativan or Klonapin for about 10 years at this point, in addition to small amounts of SSRI's and mood stabilizers, and most of my (mild) OCD symptoms are completely gone. The only thing left are the "negative" apathetic symptoms of depression.

I fee like zoloft is the best SSRI for me, but I still felt numb and very much like an observer watching my own life.
They work better for some, and not for others...

I feel like it is in no way recreational, but can be beneficial.

i both heavily addicted to benzodiazepines(temazepam and clonazepam to be specific) and on a mood stabilzer(Depakote) and they didn't really help my OCD but they did help my anxiety and insomnia.

It's good that you're looking into the SSRI's then. Prozac is another good one that activates and helps divert attention to things other than OCD.

I didn't really even think about it till this post, but it's been years of my symptoms gone. Just the negative (apathetic) depression still hanging around, dammit.

Good luck, these do work great, when they do. The good news, too, is that there are a bunch to try...

I know these types of drugs take time to build up in your system. However I got a hold of one and took it, a few hours later I was at a club in NYC. I rode with my friend there and he was having mis communications with his friends that took a while to resolve. I wasn't pissed at all (I usually would be). When we got in the club I started drinking... I felt so chill. The most chill I've ever been. I dunno if it was a placebo effect... It was interesting. I never tried it since though.

Why was this? I have never taken E, xanax, no opiates at the time. I really wasn't popping pills back then except for that one zoloft.

I've been on and off of zoloft a few times and have heard the same story about the need for it to build in your system before it starts to really work, and although it my take that long for some, ive always felt it within a few hours of the first dose.
