Hey all-

I am a recovering Benzo / Opiod addict. I am currently scripted daily

16mg Suboxone
150mg Lyrica
5mg Abilify
3mg Cogentin
1000mg Depakote
12.5mg Meclizine
Dulera
Albuterol

Today I found out I have to have surgery on my ankles. I am obviously going to talk to my doctors ( On Monday) but nervous and curious what will happen with pain management for me? I am 6 months clean from opiods

I expect you'd go on NSAIDs and/or corticosteroids, given the dosage of suboxone you're on you aren't going to be able to use anything opioid.

Unfortunately I agree with Sekio. You need to let the surgeon and especially anesthesiologist know your sub dose as soon as possible. That's a really big dose of sub that your on.

I just underwent a surgery and had an absolute nightmare with it-- I won't go into all the details, but trust me, be up front with them. Another problem that may come into play, as it did with me (I'm not currently using opiates, but was an iv user some years ago) is that my tolerance was still so out the roof, they couldn't control my pain. If they know what you're taking and how much, they realize it's surgery and they won't (shouldn't) let you suffer but they will know where to begin to control your pain. Good luck and just be up front.

That sucks man. One of my worst fears right there.

Google "low dose naltrexone for pain".

Haven't tried it myself, but am very interested, as I have chronic pain.

You need to be off opiates to take it. So no subs.

I don't know your whole story/health, so this may not be for you. If, however, you're looking for a longer term non-opiate/opioid solution for pain, this might do the trick.

Read up and see what you think, if you want to ask your dr about it.

Good luck.

Peace.

Edit:I I'm still a bit confused, though. Subs can help control pain. I've taken them for pain before.

Shit, man, I mean of any time I would choose to refrain from using opiates, after surgery of any kind, especially ankle surgery would NOT be that time.

But then i'm a total wuss, you might eat raw, dry, coffee grounds for breakfast and inject your corn liquor I.V., like all the other hardcore-living people here at BlueLight!

Whatever you choose, good luck with the surgery, and man that's a lot of drugs your on....i'm sure you know that.

They look at you like a junky probly give you fent for the surgery and tylenol for at home. Fent's really the only thing(or that I know of) that breaks through fent...I had a two of those 12.5mcg and hour patches(no gel) and held both in my mouth then chewed them after a while. Anyway it gave me a buzz, after having not even waiting 24 hours. I think each patch had 1.28mg of Fent a piece, so a few milligrams, but it was Sublingly not smoked/injected/Transdermal. Any, point being surgery they will give you that probly, and then probly no opiate for pain once you get out...I always worry about this, if one is on subs then truly needs pain meds later on in life, aren't we pretty much fucked soon as they see Suboxone on our chart, even if it's been 10 years?? Always wondered this.

^Thats what I reckon too. My PM consultant urged me to give Buprenorphine a crack for my chronic pain, but like Methadone for the same purpose I resisted. Too many ignoramuses in the medico field. One look at my file & any new doctor would assume I was/am a junkie. Those of us living with pain face enough skepticism & judgement as it is!!

OP, do let us know how your chat with the doctor went. I'm sure others will be interested as this isn't the first time the questions been raised.

All the best for your surgery,

Rtp

I don't mean to be harsh or a downer but if you're on subs you're not "clean" you're on maintenance. Not that there is anything wrong with that, better than abusing opiates and benzos uncontrollably till you are dead. You put yourself in doctors hands so keep doing that.

They'll probably dose you with tramadol instead of morphine or dilaudid. It's totally up to the attending physician at the time.

You have the right to request narcotic meds, as many do after surgery, even on subs.

A majority of subx patients can wean their doses prior to surgery, if they are concerned with breakthrough.

You'll be fine. All the best with your surgery.
