how does l-DOPA get into the brain?

It seems like the carboxyl group would make it less likely to cross the BBB than dopamine (which I know doesn't passively cross). How does this work? Is there some kind of active transport going on?

yes, I realize this is probably a stupid question but google has failed me and I don't own a pharmacology textbook.

L-DOPA is actively transported using LNAA the large neutral amino acid system.
 
it was my understanding that L-DOPA did cross the blood brain barrier? correct me if im wrong

ffs Is it too much to ask that people read the other posts in the thread before posting?

L-DOPA is actively transported across the BBB, so yes it does cross the BBB.
 
if youre refering to my post vecktor, my question wasnt answered in any of the previous posts in this thread. OP said it was less likely to cross the BBB than DA but did not say for sure.
