How does alcohol compare to xanax?

I am currently on a high dose of xanax that i find my self abusing alot. I am in the process of weening down to a lower dose. I am currently taking around 5 mg a day, trying to get down to 3 atleast.

im curious how my xanax tolerance will effect my alcohol tolerance.

I dont even remember the last time i had a drink, but its like a year or more since ive got drunk.

I ask this since im turning 21 soon and im curious how it will effect how many extra beers i would need to get a buzz going due to my xanax tolerance. a 6 pack usually would get me in the perfect drunk state, while anymore would slowly get close to throwing up terroritory

To me? I take SSRIs so it probably effects them, but

Alcohol - Nausea, no anxiety, very talkative with no slurring, and after a half hour getting tired with a headache.

Xanax - If i'm anxious I stop being anxious and if I'm not I get tired. That's it.

But another benzo,

Diazepam - Feels like alcohol but more euphoric and less sedating, also anti-anxiety.

Well it would affect alcohols tolerance to some degree but i'm not sure how much..... Are you planning to take the high dose xanax the day you plan on drinking? My advice is to not take ANY xanax on your birthday unless you plan on blacking out.

xanax tolerance is not going to have a significant impact on your alcohol tolerance.

how long have you been taking 5mg a day for? it is really hard to taper your benzo dose during a time that you are also drinking regularly. Steeley is right that xanax and alcohol create problems when mixed, but not taking your base/maintenance dose obviously isn't an option. and alcohol makes benzo withdrawal worse.

be a kid. drink 6-packs. think about what you are doing to yourself with this benzo abuse.

Please do not take your alprazolam it you plan to drink. Your GABA tolerence will be higher than someone who doesn't use benzos, but alcohol has a much more diverse and less well understood mechanism of action. Benzos are fairly selective to the GABA subtype a, affecting GABA and voltage gated ion channels. Ethanol binds to GABA, NMDA, and serotonin receptors as well as releasing dopamine. In short, you don't want to mix the two as it most likely will lead to amnesia, as well as co tribute to a possible fatal overdose resulting in ovesedation and CNS depression. Be safe; and happy birthday!

I agree to an extent about the the maintenence dose, since alprazolam is short acting....but it sounds like a recipe for disaster. Maybe lower the dose and watch the alcohol intake. It sounds to me like OP rarely drinks.

that it's short acting isn't gonna help him at all. watch the alcohol intake for sure. if he cuts his dose and goes out drinking, he'll be sick the next day. come morning, hands shaking so hard it will be difficult to get the safety cap off the prescription bottle. sad shit to have to worry about on your 21st.

^^ yeah thats what i'm saying, because alprazolam is short acting he runs a higher risk of seizing as opposed to cutting the dose of clonazepam or diazepam. I've taken benzos the last 9 years and the only time i've ever seized was with xanax because of how short acting it is.

thanks for all the replys.

i dont plan on mixing the two when i am 21.

i have taken 1mg in the morning and 4mg at night past 2 nights. i am going to try to take half of one this morning and then 3 and half for night. doing this slowly over these next couple months to wear i feel comfortable going the whole day without it until night, i dont want to have a seizure that i know are possible.
