so ive been dealing with this alot lately and its been bugging me. how do you rate your bud right when you pick up a sack? and ya of course smoke it but im talking about like scent and looks and shit. like my friends will smell a bag and if they think its a "beaster" smell they just throw it down and dont want it. but i picked up some of the same weed and got BAKED off like one bowl. theres no way that there is beasters that can get me more baked then a bowl of nug. do you see my point? and looks like ive picked up some brown weed that totally destroyed me and ive had beautiful bud that doesnt even do barely anything. idk i guess my question is "How judgmental about bud are you before you smoke it?" i barely judge at all till i can get a hit

if i see a nice looking nug then of course i'm going for that, but ive had plenty of weed that looks crappy and smashes me, its not all about how it looks, but THC, CBN content levels.

Sounds like your friends are just assholes. Chocolate Thai is pretty brown and it kicks ass. You shouldn't turn your nose up at nug without trying it unless you think the dealer has tampered with it. I am not just refuring to "lacing" but any contaminate that might have been added along the way. I knew a dealer who once sold someone a bag of shake with pencil shavings in it because he didn't like the kid who was buying it.

Many people become "connoisseurs" over time, but your friends sound like pot snobs, who tend to be annoying privileged white boys. My advice? Get some new friends.

I can usually tell if a weed is either 'shit, average, good' just by looking it over and smelling it, though smell can be decieving alot of the time. Certain strains have a smell.. i will smell the same stuff now and then(i buy weed from alot of dif dealers) and i will recognise the taste and smell etc so i know its good stuff or bad etc.

Generally though, if its nugs/bud then its good.. people dont buy shit weed around here because people just dont buy it.. my new dealer was telling me about his last lot of shit was really hard to get rid of and i thought it was decent so yeah :\

At the end of the day, being able to distinguish a weeds quality easily is an artform and takes years of practice. Just like someone who examines the quality of anything, whether it be gem stones or used cars :)

A lot of things come into play, smell however isn't really one. Smell can depends a lot on if the plant is flushed properly and what types of fertilizer.

I look for two things, is it cured well do the stems break nicely, and does it look like somebody sprayed sugary goodness all over it. (but didn't)

The only thing i look for when buying the weed is the size, obviously, and round here i have to be real careful as lots of the weed is sprayed, not good.

The thought of sprayed weed makes me so upset. I really hope we don't start seeing that stuff in the states, most of my stuff is homegrown Colorado stuff so I should be ok. I'm really sorry you have to put up with shit like that.

i only buy stuff that has:
nice dense, intact buds
decent amount of trichromes throughout
and pungent smell (usually)

I don't really get any choice, my guy generally only has one type at a time and when I roll around there he just pulls out a single bag that I'd preordered. Not much of a pick and choose society over here in Australia.

i don't judge it negatively until i've smoked it. plenty of times i've had something that looked/smelled sub-par but rocked my ass, although if it looks suspect i'll generally buy as small an amount as possible.

however, i've never had great-looking, great-smelling bud that dissappointed. if it's got the scent, trichomes, manicuring, etc. that i'm looking for, i definitely don't think twice about it.

If its all sticky then its usually really good. If it smells really strong I assume it is and so far it hasn't deceived me.
