Opioids How do you deal with pain after surgery or dental surgery as an ex-opioid abuser?

I don't wish this on anybody, but you never know what might happen. I just got clean 3 weeks for now, and start to feel one of my remaining baby tooth to ache. It could be the case that this of course is the effect from being oppy free and now that my nerve system finally started functioning naturally!

I rather skip a dental appointment for now and have it removed somewhere in the future, since I'm way too early in recovery to be prescribed codeine or vikes after pulling that little sucker out, Ibuprofen will work just fine for now...but for how long?

As for surgery, I luckily never had go through any of it, however wondering if anyone has any experience taking for example morphine or fentanyl (and the dose) after a rough surgery. I assume we all as ex-opiate abuser don't want to fall in love with our ex sins after having to go through any sort of treatment!

Just continue to be clean. You'll feel better and I'm sure the doctors end up treating you with a bit more dignity and respect when discussing issues around pain. As far as surgery there are non opioid anesthesia and while discomfort and pain might be there it's a good reminder that those struggles and challenges are really short when you know addiction is a life time of a challenge already.

Thats a tough one, one of my teeth is getting really bad I am worried it is going to fall out soon. Aside from not having insurance which is another topic I am on methadone so I know anything they give me will not work. I dont worry so much about dental stuff as I have needed work ever since I was little so the pain and drilling is not a big deal to me, I worry about the unknown. What if part of me fails and i need massive surgery like not fun in anyway kind and the morphine wont work? I worry about my g/f in the same respect, are we forced to endure pain that no one else would because we are in recovery? I understand that might just be the way it is sometimes its a scary thought.

I would go to the dentist and just take non narcotic pain killers once the stuff is done. Dont even fill the script if you are concerned or fill it and give it to a friend.

in my country, at least, we are only given an injection of anesthetic (lidocaine, or some derivative) and then we've just gotta grip the chair and get it yanked out; one volcanic explosion of pain, and then nothing. hate the dentists, but ibuprofen will only hold you for so long.

lol. this is america, if you want, you can get put out for your check-up ('sleep dentistry' look it up)

Remember not everyone here is from us or has the luxury to afford those comfort measures.Just saying

Usually having it pulled will remove the pain not cause more of it. Also baby teeth? WTF?

Go see a dentist ASAP, it is better to have it checked out by a dentist and have him tell you what's up, it could be a sign of infection or maybe just sensitivity. It is also way better to have a tooth leave your body of its own accord rather than decaying to the point where it needs to be removed. You can get pretty severely fucked up from dental infections, it's not something to be taken lightly.

Narcotics are generally less useful for dental pain than something like lidocaine anyway.

Usually your gums swell up and you have pain and disfigurement for days after a tooth is removed, the difference is that it gets better afterwards whereas a rotten tooth will only get worse.

I agree with the wtf on baby teeth...

i was in same situation..clean off opiates for 5-6 months and had to have a tooth pulled..was worried but i had it pulled and just took ibuprofen for it and dealt with the minor pain..it wasnt nothing couldnt handle so it wont be a problem for you either..at worst buy some orajel for when it starts hurting if it does..i dont think it will though.

well if you want to know of a drug that can numb you look at MXE ...methoxetamine, works very well as a pain killer as would other NMDA antags

Since I need like 8 extreactions and 3 fillings,Ive been looking into getting a decent supply of ISI Cream Chargers (whippets). The places here tht do sleep dentistry are mega expsnive, and I dont fancy them shooting about 30 shots of xxx-caine into my guns to remove the stuff. This would be for post op pain; there are a few clinics here that for like 40$ will provide nitrous, but I'd rather be unconcious during this whole, expensive mess.

I dont know about anyone else, but I recall many times when strong narcotics would make my already bad teeth hurt worse, methadone especially, I have been doing opiates for a long time, it has taken a major toll on my teeth, already have a full partial on top, most of my bottom teeth are rotting from the inside, sine Ive been using H more regularly the past couple years, my teeth have gotten alot worse too.

Dentists here used to give percocet 5s or 7.5s after pulling a tooth, but now, you are lucky to get vicoden 5s!! crackdown on pills here has been fucking tough!

You can also take paracetamol in addition to ibuprofen, or be prescribed strong non-opioid pain killers like nefopam.

If its a baby tooth it's most likely waaaaay overdue to come out on its own anyway...most people lose theirs by 12 or 13. unless you're referring to wisdom teeth? and with those freezing goes a long way...
