Hey, sorry in advance I wasn't sure where to put this.. How did people discover insufflation as a method of taking drugs? Was it it an accident or something? I mean, who thinks the nose it a good place to put drugs up. Any insight would be much appreciated.

It was probably a result of realizing that drugs could be absorbed through mucus membranes.

This is a good question. I was actually thinking about it a week ago. Who was the first to snort something, and what was it? I don't think this is something you learn by mistake. About a 2 minute google search came up short.

Yopo snuff with dmt could have been first, it maybe tobacco snuff?

I think a more interesting question is who the hell discovered that when you mix mimosa hostilis and syrian rue it becomes active when both are inactive alone???

I'd assume it went something like "We can smoke things, we can swallow them... what other holes can they go into?"

And this lead to snorting, rectal, IV, ect....

Just my guess.

LoL, I couldn't see Shakespeare writing that with more grace.

:-P

"hey marvin this leaf gets me done fucked up when we shove it in the food hole, let us try the breath hole, then the A-hole!"

I doubt it would be possible to tell which drug was used which way first until you get into more modern things like smoking (probably tobacco then opium) or injection (probably morphine). Just my guess.

FYI, the field you should be looking at is:

AHAHAHAH! That made my morning. Personally, I believe people started snorting because they wanted to get high faster and made a logical conclusion that the nose is a more direct patch to the brain.

I'm really tempted to walk around with a bag of weed saying "THIS LEAF GETS ME DONE FUCKED UP."

On a more serious note... think about it. How many kids have you seen drinking coke from a straw with a few friends of theres then look over and say "HEY MAN. I DARE YOU TO DRINK THAT THREW YOUR NOSE. IT'LL TASTE GOOD!"... I can remember plenty of times were that happened to me as a kid. Same idea, only with drugs and people who aren't 12.

:-D lol, are you implying this is where they got the idea for the first insuffulation? ;-)

That never happend to me, I think that we always said that with pixie sticks. It must have been through some other kid with a coke addict family member cause I led a sheltered life and wouldn't have known what the hell they were talking about until I was older.

I can see a neanderthal laughing while drinking his coconut juice and it coming out the nose so they figured that might work the opposite way and tried it until they got to a psychoactive plant. I would think yopo or tobacco as cocaine wouldn't be refined for many millennia.

The oldest known psychoactive is most likely an edible one like psylocin mushrooms or amanitas. I know the oldest sculpture known looks like an a. Musicaria. Other than that definitive proof is likely non existent as the oldest human body intact is not from jungles, although A musicaria might have been in the environment, I'm sure they would have mentioned that when they cataloged his stomach contents.

See: ethnomycology another subset of ethnobiology .

Haha. That just gave me a visual of a cave man and his family (accidentally)tripping on mushrooms for the first time and flipping out trying to figure out wtf is going on.
