Hi whenever I went to my doctor I told them that I was suffering from depression, and very bad anxiety. She put me on celexa which is citalopram. She put me on 20mg which was twice a day. It did help somewhat but I failed my oral communications class in college because of how bad my anxiety was. I don't know how to go about asking for a different medication or something else that will help.

Hello! When I had my first bad anxiety attack I knew I had to try and ask my doctor for a prescription to something that would help my situation. I went to my doctor and told him about the anxiety attack I had and the symptoms I experienced. I also brought up the possibility for addiction and my concerns. This was basically a way of showing him that I am knowledgeable about my situation, as well as the possible problems associated with the new drug prescription in order to make him feel better about giving out a prescription without any prior history of anxiety on my medical chart. This was really important to me because nothing else was getting me the relief i needed and i really needed the prescription! A lot(and i mean ALOT) of people fake these symptoms to abuse the medication and make it hard for people who really need it to get prescribed! Luckily he prescribed me Klonopin 1mg with a 90 day prescription and everything has been great ever since!

So my advice would be to schedule an appointment with your health care providers and tell them honestly what you are feeling and what your concerns are as well to show you have been thinking about it and want to be safe! Best of luck to you!!!

Simply tell your doctor what you have written here - they are aware that the first prescribed medication may not be the correct one and will be more than happy to suggest something else until you find something that works.

try to be honest and up front about your needs. if one medication doesn't work, tell your doctor and hopefully they'll try something different. most doctors/health care providers will be able to tell if you're med seeking so be careful what you say

hahahahahahahahahahaha.
Alright, I'm sorry.. Just poking fun.

Being honest with doctors depends what part of the country you're in. If you're in FL, you wouldn't even be posting this. If you're in NY, it's going to be finding a doctor who's younger, not as hysteria-driven as a lot of others, and finally earning trust by being trustworthy. If you live in NJ, move.

@thelung:
That makes a good question instead of poking fun:

Your tag says Seattle. Depression and anxiety is highest there comparatively. How are Drs locally with prescribing controlled substances? Here in Urban NY, it's as much of a job as it would be to buy street drugs. Seriously.

If you live in a rich, white neighborhood and have good insurance (like Premera Blue Cross or something like that), you can get what you need pretty easily. If you have the state medicaid insurance and go to a clinic say, in the downtown area, forget about it. I lived on in Eastern WA for a long time and was on my father's Premera Blue Cross plan and had access to great medical care. Now I'm on obamacare medicaid and I was still able to get Clonazepam (a low daily dose mind you) from the psychiatric nurse practitioner that works at my methadone clinic. I no longer take the Klonopin though...but that's besides the point...

My doctor prescribed me four different meds (SNRIs and SSRIs) and none of them helped/worked. So he's trying to get me a referral to a psychiatrist because nothing worked. Each time something didn't work, I'd go in, and just explain that it didn't work. Either it was making me throw up, it was making me more paranoid, whatever.
