How can I be sure I have the right kind of shrooms?

I'm supposed to be able to get some shrooms here soon from a friend of a friend who is currently growing them but I still have one fear of shrooms and that is of getting poisonous mushrooms instead of psychoactive psilocin/psiolcybin shrooms. I think this idea stuck in my mind could give way to a bad trip quite easily so I would like to be able to get rid of it before I try them. So is there an easy way to identify the shrooms? and if someone is growing them are the chances of them being poisonous almost none?

I would really like to avoid a bad first trip, as well as dying from poisonous shrooms, so any info or help would be much appreciated.

Yeah thats really true.^
Only things he needs to take care of is that he has the right spores to begin with, by just buying the correct type strain - which he most probably has. Then just don't let it contaminate and you're all set.
If you're still worried you could try like 1/25 dose, then if it's OK try 1/5 and after that try what you actually want to take.

Maybe ask him what type they are and look it up on the net, smell them and look at them to see if they seem moldy.

If he's growing poisnous shrooms he must be one hellacious fuckwit.

^ha... and most likely he's growing a proper variety. I've heard of a few incidents with people mistaking a poisonous mushroom for a psilocybe in the wild, but never heard even anecdotal evidence about someone growing a poisonous variety. Also, cubensis, and several other psilocybe sp. will bruise a bluish color when picked.

The bluish bruising should not be considered a conclusive indication.

There are poisonous mushrooms out there which bruise blue. Beware.

Although. I find it highly unlikely that anyone could grow poisonous mushrooms by mistake. P. cubensis (cubensae?) are easy to grow, any idiot can do it. In order to move to other species, there is a certain level of skill and knowledge of mycology required, so that if you are going to grow a poisonous species you have to know what you are doing. Ergo, no one ignorant enough to confuse a poisonous species to a psilocybe would be able to accomplish growing a poisonous species.

ok cool thanks for the info

i just meant that he could do it by mistake and not realize it but...

anyway i'm sure my friend will try them before i have the chance to even get a hold of them so i'll be able to hear all about them from him

so if i do start tripping on them does that mean they're legit? (in other words, do the poisonous varieties make you trip as well?)

on a side note i do know of someone who grew some shrooms then tested some on one of his pets which died. this scared him out of ever growing them again. would this just be due to the way the animal metabolizes it or could it have been due to poison shrooms?

You should tell that person he/she is a complete and utter idiot. What kind of asshole tests the safety of his psychoactive substances with poor defenseless pets? It's a good thing this person never tried the shrooms. Morons like him/her should have no right to enjoy psychedelics.

Animals react very differently to many substances which are harmless to humans. Tryptamines can be deadly to rodents and other small animals.

Agreed, that is one of the more horrible things I've heard. Taking risks with your own life is your decision, forcing them on an innocent animal is really sick, especially for such a pointless exercise.

Sounds like the makings of another psychedelic urban legend, but if you say so. It is very possible that the mushrooms would have been fine to consume, different animals have different reactions to mushrooms. There are mushrooms that could kill people very quickly, but would make other creatures just have a stomach ache.

At OP - the only way to be sure is to have a mushroom expert confirm the ID of the mushroom for you. If you don't know any personally, you can try posting at shroomery.com or shroomtalk.com. They won't be able to give you 100% ID from just pictures but could give you confidence that you'll be alright. Also, another trick that is used by amateur mushroom hunters is to save at least one whole mushroom and freeze it. That way if you do get sick, you can take it to the hospital with you - they will be able to call a mycologist and get it ID'ed so they can provide proper treatment.

Good luck.

Hunting wild mushrooms without the needed experience? Pretty bad idea.
Trusting a friend of a friend? Depends on the friend.
Risky to eat the mushrooms you are getting? Most probably not, for the reasons previously stated. In the end you have to trust these people but it would be an extraordinary stunt if they grew shrooms at home that are really health-threatening.

Do make sure they are not rotten, molded, tainted or infested - that could make you pretty ill.

If there is nothing else this will be closing. :) just pointing that out

ok that's good then i won't freak out while tripping as long as i keep that in mind

thanks for all the info and sorry for sharing the info about the guy who fed it to his rat i don't think he knew it would have adverse effects on it unless it would also have the same effects on him so he was just doing it before he tried them himself (which he never did)

@Solipsis i got the help i needed feel free to close this whenever

I've had "shrooms" which were like dried.. And were in lots of pieces LOL we had a pretty crazy shroom trip.. And it seemed like a shroom trip by the way they are described.. But they didn't have caps or any of that :/ was curious if it could be some sort of other mushroom or what? Some people told me the taste/smell reminded them of peanuts or cardboard LOL

Not to keep bashing that guy Squishy, but even when psychedelics have the expected effect it is cruel to subject an animal to it. They don't have the consciousness we do to direct what they experience and most of all: they don't agree to being dosed in any way.

This thread is for your personal situation, as such it's not being merged...
The mushrooms thread has a number of subthreads now, if anyone has any questions or remarks go there or to the main mushroom page following the PD Essentials list. Thanks!
