How can I avoid fucking my thumb up when fighting?

Obviously I don't tuck my thumb under my fingers as I'd break it if I punched someone.

But it seems where ever I clench my fist, with my thumb out of the way I'll still fuck it up if I throw a hard punch.

There just isn't a comfy position for it to go..

on top of your top knuckles....i dont know how to say it...

i dont think its an uncomfortable position for your thumbs, but where they would naturally go?

I guess I have deformed hands, hence why I'm such a good spinner in cricket..

I guess I'll just fight through the pain when I need too.

ya dude i have the same problem. I either have oddly shaped thumbs or there extra long, im not sure. I also think i might have extra long parts on my fingers.. you know where your knuckle you punch with joins to your next knuckle.. yeah well i think that bit is extra long because when i make a fist i cant put my fingers solidly into my hand and make it flat where i punch with, it kind of sticks out(the 2nd knuckles) almost like a slope/steep bank. Same goes for my thumb, the first length is too long. It doesnt matter when you actually punch someone though because the force of punching them will not matter because all your fingers and stuff will cushion out of the way till your knuckles, the solid part that WONT move out of the way hits them.

also, if you tilt your fist downwards a little bit it helps alot. just as long as that knuckle on your thumb(the 2nd one) is not so long that it actually sticks out past the other knuckles(the 2nd ones on your 4 other fingers) when you make a fist, you should be fine.

You could always palm them too, if your in a fight and fuck your hand up from punching wrong. Just use the hard bit where your wrist goes to your hand... its pretty strong and if you hit them in the nose or face it will do a decent amount of damage.

i thought this was going to be about Tekken or something. :\

try not getting into fights.

fighting is neither a sport nor gaming... :|

Of course fighting is a sport, what are you on about? 'bare knuckle boxing' mate.

well if that's what eddie is referring to, i apologise. ;)

haha well, lets just pretend he is. I dunno where else this would be better suited tbh

I always found 'Punch N run' worked best..

'Think N punch' generally results in you getting punched first

The more you practice how to make a proper fist, the more natural it will become. To get your thumb to tuck across proper, you may need to actually use your other hand and fix the position/ stretch over your thumb when you practice, but it will eventually come naturally. The more "down" you try to point the tip of your thumb, the further you'll be able to reach it across your fingers. When i make a tight fist, I can get the bending joint to pass between my pointer and middle finger, and the inner aspect of my fist is completely flat. It comes from a lot of practice, however. Besides your thumb, you also need to focus on the alignment of your wrist. When you make contact with an object, a good technique is to have the impact land evenly across your first and second knuckles. An easy way to practice this is to do knuckle pushups on a hard wood floor. If you've never done it before, the pain will be pretty fucking intense at first. But your hands will callous quickly, and if you're doing it right, the redness will be, like I said, on the first two knuckle tops and a little bit of the finger space below that. By knuckle tops, I mean the ones which start where your hand ends/where a ring would sit if you were wearing rings on your pointer and middle fingers.

punch properly (like ^vibs describes) and there will be no problem

or better yet, don't punch at all.

As everyone said, avoiding a fight is the best.

Otherwise, if I remember correctly (and I probably am not), my muay-thai fighting friends would bend their thumb (like holding a lighter, with the thumb touching the index finger, making a triangle shape...

That works the best for me, although its a bit of a strain to keep my thumb back there.. just need to make it second nature. Cheers

That's the proper way to form a fist, now depending upon the length of your thumb you may rest it on your middle or index finger.

See how the fingers all are alinged to form a square? If your fingers aren't straight and aligned you can break your knucles/wrist/and/or fingers.

Hope that helps.

I actually stick my thumb straight out, like a "gig'em aggies" sign or a thumbs up. Its a habit I started to keep my retarded self from tucking it under my fingers. I did it accidentally once and broke it. The only fundamental problem I could see with this method is it tends to break the stability of the square that TRITF speaks of. I find that I am still able to connect and make solid contact this way without injuring my thumb.

Lol, I used to do the same thing, But one night I got drunk and kinda slid my hand across their face(breaking my left thumb).

I've seen people employ this method with good results, but just have to pay attention.

Edit: You mention the aggies you from texas?

or mixed martial arts (MMA), which is becoming absolutely gigantic in the US as of late...

If its already gone to the punching stage you've already lost as you're already facing him. Before any aggression is mutually assumed by the both of you, you should be waiting for him to have his back towards you and his eyes facing a wall or some other structure of the venue.

Gain some speed and ram your shoulder into his lower back so he slams head first into some sort of fixture while sustaining some sort of spine distress.

And then run. GG
