how bad is n2o for you?

im just wondering how bad it really is for you? i already kno about the B vitamin depletion, but is there n e thing else? does it really "kill brain cells"? ive noticed that i do feel stupid after doing like 10 cartridges in like 15 minutes, so i stopped doing n2o. its been a few months since i last did it.
 
I'd say a large degree of the "feel stupid" factor resides in the 'oh shit I'm a skanky bum I just inhaled whipped cream chargers to get high' effect. The rest is probably brain damage.
Nitrous is a dissassociative, like DXM and Ketamine, which are known to have a possible link between excessive use and Olneys Lesions which are holes in your brain. Nitrous may cause less damage due to its very short length of effect.
Other than that, extreme, and by extreme I mean 40 or so a day, every day, usage can cause the Central Nervous System to degenerate (mainly due to vit B deficiency) to the level where you're pissing yourself and unable to walk, not pretty.
Anyway, yeah there's probably braindamage, if you're so worried though, stop doing them.

I think the consensus seems to be that most of the negative side effects from N2O use are caused by vitamin B12 deficiency and oxygen deprivation. Meaning, if you take your supplements, and stay away from dangerous masks and stick to balloons/chargers... and of course exercise moderation, you should be OK.

I don't think it would be a good idea to hotrail whippits. The cartridges might explode under such high temperatures, sending shrapenal through your flesh in your face, cutting your sinuses open, and lodging in your brain, killing you.
Yeah, and don't forget to breath air while doing whippets. Just because you feel like it's ok to breath only nitrous when you are on it, and you don't get that suffocating feeling, doesn't mean your brain has oxygen. Feelings of suffocation comes from buildup of CO2, not from oxygen depletion, I believe, so you could starve your brain from oxygen and not even feel it. So breath real air at least a couple times in between your whippets.
 
I have noticed that after a nitrous session (lets say 10-20 bulbs worth), my word recall skill is significantly impaired for the next week or so. This is one of the skills which could be damaged by heavy dissociative use according to This is Your Brain on Dissociatives. I rarely use ketamine or DXM so it must be the nitrous which is to blame.
As with all things, moderation is the key.

n2o is a dissociative and is a drug. being a drug it must be used in moderation to remain healthy. there is a reason they call it hippie-crack. don't think it is a harmless high that does not do any damage to your brain, because it certainly does after extended use.
 
I largely agree and support what everyone has echoed above on Nitrous Oxide - though allow me to offer some additional 'anaesthetic' comments on nitrous. Nitrous is used very commonly as an adjunct to General Anaesthesia.
I am not aware of any direct neurotoxic effects of nitrous oxide - but only secondary neurological damage as a result of hypoxia (lack of oxygen) during the use of nitrous.
Nitrous reacts chemically with Vit B12: turning Cob(I)alamin into Cob(III)alamin and it no longer functions as a methyl carrier and herefore decreases the activity of Vitamin B12. As a result of this, thiamine synthase (enzyme involved with turning homocysteine into methionine) is inhibited. This can lead to a demethylation of methyl-tetrahydrofolate which is essential for DNA synthesis.
Where does this affect DNA synthesis?
(i) Megaloblastic changes only found in patients exposed to high concentrations for around 24 hours in a 2-3 week period (or much sooner if concurrent illness). It is estimated from laboratory data that a 5 hour exposure of 50% nitrous can produce characteristic changes in the bone marrow consistent with megaloblastosis.
(ii) Foetal Maturation: due to problems with DNA synthesis - theoretically teratogenic - but never been proven in humans !
There are other problems with Nitrous Oxide but these relate more specifically to medical usage rather than recreational.
