I'm not sure whether or not this thread belongs in the Cannabis Discussion, but it's cannabis-related so I figure it's okay.

I was sitting around smoking with some friends earlier tonight, and one of said friends mentioned that the hops plant is essentially the sister plant to the cannabis plant. My friend then continued to tell us that it's possible to fuse (this isn't the term that my friend used, but I can't remember exactly what she said) a hops seed and cannabis seed and generate THC on the buds from the hops plant. We came to a general consensus that this may be a way around the ban on marijuana in our location and I was wondering if a)anyone has any knowledge on the legality of hops buds with THC, and b)if anyone has heard of this or experimented with it.

Joking right? Got a good laugh here. Sorry dont have any answer but thanks for the chuckles:-):-):-)

Technically it's possible to graft a hop plant onto a cannabis rootstock. But then, you just get hops growing on an alien rootstock. The resulting plant IS a hop and has no noticeable psychoactive properties. This idea keeps rearing its head,a bit of an urban myth. I fell for it first time as well, actually did the grafting- what a waste of time!

Even if it would work it would still contain THC which in itself is illegal so what difference would it make?

Why can't you do it the other way around though?
I've certainly heard of plenty of examples of active-cacti being grown on non-active rootstock for hardiness, speed of growth and thus synthesis of actives.
Admittedly, I've only heard anecdotes and hearsay about the hopijuana plant. But I see no reason why it wouldn't work horticulturally (grafting cannabis onto hops rootstock, that is).

Also, it would be a method to keep a mother/strain in perpetuity?
Would it make re-veg's easier to do?

No, no jokes here. But for what it's worth, I'm glad it amused you. ;)

Sorry op I bet this wasn't the answer you were hopping for! Interesting thread though.

No worries! I was just asking out of mere curiosity; I had/have no intentions of doing this myself.

Thank you all for your contributions!

Also not sure if it applies here to this forum but it seems like we cant give out legal advice, so who is to say one way or the other. Sorry. Well another poster answered re possibility. Besides we dont know your location so who is to say what about the "ban"

It is NOT possible to graft cannabis onto hops or vice versa!! It won't take and it won't become a hops plant or a cannabis plant like suggested above. The reason this urban legend persists is because In 1943 botanists Warmke and Davidson claimed that hops tops grafted upon cannabis roots produced "...as much drug as leaves from intact hemp plants, even though leaves from intact hop plants are completely nontoxic.". According to this research active cannabinoids were being produced in the roots and transported across the graft to the hops tops. Later research entirely disproved the theory and it's resulted in one of the most common canna urban myths ever since.

It SHOULD in theory be possible but I have never heard or seen anyone ever do it.

Cannabis grafts can be grafted onto cannabis rootstocks or cannabis scions and I've seen it done plenty of times. You can get loads of strains onto one plant to cut plant numbers as well as graft your favorite strain onto a special rootstock strain bred to be resistant to molds like pythium or other disease (this is the technique they use to grow heirloom tomatoes as vigorously as F1 hybrids from big agriculture). One day when canna is legal I am sure you will find landrace heirlooms grafted onto special hybrid disease resistant rootstock just like they do with tomatoes, peppers, chillies and other fruit/veg. I would love to be one of the first because afaik it's never been done before.

THANK YOU! This is the answer I was looking for.

I feel horribly sorry about your need to be so negative when all I did was ask an innocent question. Neither of your answers have been helpful nor useful, I don't see why you're even bothering to give feedback. Thanks for nothing I suppose? Haha.

lets not get rude or bitter here. potheads typically are jolly people lets try to keep it that way, less ignorance and violence and more chance for legalization.

anyways!!! its technically possible to graph a hops and marijuana plant together. most likely you'd need both varieties of the two to be VERY hardy, easy growing ones. my suggestion would be a common hearty hops strain, like i think cascade hops would be best. (yeah i just double checked that real quick, CASCADE are probably the easiest, i like them too) as for the weed... if u want a sativa indica hybrid i highly suggest "Dinachem" or "G13 labs Pineapple Express". those are very easy to grow and great yielders, and both are VERY potent. if your strictly stuck on vigor and dont care quite as much about potency, try Dinafem Critical +. its super easy to grow, just not as strong of high, but still great skunky weed. if u live in the cold areas u need an indica like master kush, afghan, mazar... etc.

this has been done before and it really didnt accomplish anything. the actual THC is illegal itself anyways thanx to the bush admin. in the usa anyways. even ditchweed would be illegal with a whopping .00001% thc. federally anyways.

so while it might sound cool it doesnt really work. :(

You are welcome sam. Wasnt going for negative just found humor in this post. Ok so sorry to have made you upset. Calmate por favor, tranquilo.

A bit off topic...but I have successfully dry hopped my home-brew (5 gallons at a time) with sativa bud.
up to an oz. of some beauty long Jamaican buds in a nylon bag, then into the secondary carboy after the fermentation takes place
It imparts a fragrant floral spicy nose to the beer, doing this with hops does the same without the bitterness the hops impart during the boil.
I know the low % of alcohol breaks down some of the THC (just not sure how much)...the best part is I can dry the buds out after
the dry-hop and its still strong, and the different stages of roasted barley add a great nutty (smoke) flavor!

^ that's interesting. I never knew you were into brewing.

It's a great hobby, almost as fun as staking a 20 ft. plant down so that each branch turns into a plant or pruning a 4' x 4' bush so it produces 500 joint sized buds... even though I mostly just sample most of my home-brew, my friends love it.
It's a great barter, I love seafood - fishermen love micro-brew!

Sweet! You pretty much covered it, thank you. :)

Fire & Water how does it compare to commercial brands? If it were legal to make on a massive scare commercially could you see consumers paying to drink it? I brewed beer when I was a teenager but looking back the stuff I made tasted awful. Sure it was drinkable but it was certainly not pleasant.

Allot of friends/people that try my beer like it as much or better than some the NW micro-brews on the shelf and living here I get my barley, wheat, hops and most yeast the same places the micro breweries get it So yeah, every style is pretty easy to learn...
I actually use Kent (goldings) hops when I brew English styles (along w/ softened water) little things that help make it taste authentic (I brew a Bass Ale clone) IPA's are the most popular style here, but I find most of them unbalanced because of the over abundance of hops used in the wort
Not sure how the laws are going to apply to stores that sell beer in Wa. state but if growers and brewers have their way, we will see cannabis buds mixed in alongside hops/dry hopped...
Cheers
