Here's a couple to start...

Fanta... invented by Nazis when Coca Cola got slapped by the US Govt and told to stop sending the ingredients for coke to Germany.

Kellogg's Corn Flakes - Kellogg was religious and he invented corn flakes to DECREASE the sex drive in teens - there is so little food value in them that when an experiment using rats eating corn flakes was run, after 6 weeks the rats were so thin they got through the bars of their cages into the room where all the corn flake packages were and ate all the cardboard, leaving the corn flakes behind.

Vibrators were invented by the Quakers, a religious sect in the US - the idea was if women could pleasure themselves they'd let men get on with being religious. :D
 
Hopefully not a 'drug' discussion... but...

Toothpaste was invented because the producers of Aluminium (aluminum in the States) were about to be slugged millions of dollars in fines for pollution. Sodium Fluoride (in various forms) is a left-over of making aluminium and being highly toxic, places like Belgium and even America were about to slug companies like Alcoa for the clean up.

Suddenly it turned into the thing we all had to have to prevent dental caries... even though, right from the start, the evidence was, at best, equivocal.
 
Did you know there is no practical reason for a countdown for take off of rockets/shuttles? They could just press Go as soon as all the station perform Go/NoGo checks. It came from a movie and NASA decided it made for good dramatic effect.
The first known association with rockets was in the 1929 German science fiction movie Die Frau im Mond (English: Woman in the Moon) written by Thea von Harbou and directed by Fritz Lang in an attempt to increase the drama of the launch sequence of the story's lunar-bound rocket.

Henry Ford designed his first car to run on biofuel made from Hemp (marijuana)

Later he made a car with a body formed in a fashion similar to fibreglass, using hemp fibre.

In the early part of this century, John Harvey Kellogg gained a reputation both as a nutritionist and a sexual adviser. The foods that Kellogg created (including the now-famous corn flakes) were designed to promote health and decrease interest in sex.

Mr. Kellogg thought sex was the ultimate abomination and remained celibate even in marriage. Masturbation was the worst sin imaginable to him. He believed it led to leprosy, tuberculosis, heart disease, epilepsy, dimness of vision, insanity, idiocy, and death. He also preached that masturbation led to bashfulness in some people, unnatural boldness in others, a fondness for spicy foods, round shoulders, and acne. That’s quite a list!

It turns out they might not actually have the effect but that doesn't change WHY he made them.

Note that the Kellogg's site doesn't say this. :D I wonder why...?

Pretty much... although my understanding was he was something like a Quaker... Some of those people blame women for secually distracting men from the holy path of God.

Like... of course, if women didn't keep offering sex, none of us blokes would EVER think about it... :D

Me neither, I'm actually a beer guy. But even wide range of beers I tried so far lead me to either Czech Republic or Germany, they make finest beer in the world.
