Which is better for tolerance issues. Taking a larger does of opiates less frequently or smaller doses more often???? Or does it make a difference???

I have stopped using my methadone and fentyl patches, which leaves me with oxycontin and oxycodone to try and lower my tolerance. Right or wrong????

Do you mean like 4 times a day versus twice a day or once a day versus once a week or what?

In general I'd say that doing it less often is more of a factor than the amount you do.

Oh no, I mean daily. Huge tolerance, prescribed everything under the sun. Have got my dosing down from over 900 mgs. of oxycodone daily to 300 in the last year. I can use less however I don't. Also prescribed 10mgs. methadone, 25 mg. fentyl patch and 40 mgs. oxycontin. I am trying to figure out the best method and schedule to lower tolerance and taper off more. As many have said "The honeymoon is over" and I am done with self-medicating.

In that case taking less more often will limit both the highs and the lows of the drug levels in your system which I believe would be advantageous.

Thank you. Also do you know if stopping methadone but continued with other opiates would cause w/d's or visa-versa? I am trying to figure out the best way to taper without too much discomfort. Sounds so charming doesn't it. Discomfort - like it's hgh tea or something. Thank you again. bipolarette

Very basically you can assume that they are all opioids and therefore all contributing to the same thing. Stopping one before the other won't make much difference in that you have to go through the discomfort at some point. That being said there are small differences such as methadone having the longest half life so leaving it to the end will mean the longest withdrawals but will also mean you can get out of dosing all the time, just take a pill and get on with your life.

Thanks again. Been taking all this to alleivate depression and of course it's all reversed. Nothing else has worked like good old opiates and now that is done, oh well. Like you said I will get on with my life. It would be soo nice to convey to the opiate niatve (spelling?) it ain't worth it, in the end you have got to face the demon one way or the other..in life or in death our choice. As of 5 mins. ago I now have the help to do just that. Thank you again amapola

Tapering Methadone won't be as hard for you as it would be for someone on Methadone maintenance because you have other opiates to help you out. Taper the Methadone 2mg every 3 days. Withdrawals won't be so bad because your only on 10mg. If you taper correctly you should feel minimal withdrawals. They will linger for awhile. Possibly weeks but they should be subtle. You don't need to worry about puking or anything.
