Hey so I've been coming to this website for years, it's always been a super useful resource, so I figured I'd make an account. My friend and I are having some issues with alcohol and I'm looking for advice, especially because christmas is coming up and we have to go home to our families and we're worried about withdrawals, so any tips would be appreciated. I don't have access to Librium, Valium, or Ativan. I just have xan and percs, and I'm not sure if those will help. We're trying to cut down in general but I don't think we'll be at a solid enough place before we go home in 2 days and both of us are going to dry households. We're very nervous about withdrawals and don't know what to do

Welcome and you are in good hands. How long will you be at the dry house and how much do you usually drink every day ? The xanax will most assuredly help and so will the percs. Benzo will lower your seizure threshold and relax you.........perc will make you happy and not care that you are going without the alcohol.

More people will be coming on and helping you through this so that you can enjoy your holiday and not WD.

Super glad you made an account. Don't abandon us and stop logging in after you get your answers. I'm trying to get people to stick around so I'm gonna keep my eye on you !! :Mario party:

Welcome @drmichaelimperioli :)

Lots of amazing people here, that only want the best for you .

Have you/friend considered detox? Like check in at a medical detox for a week or so?

Check out our Recovery Focus forums such as The Dark Side.

Also, you can use the search function:)

Hi from Southern Cali! Just wanted to pop in and say welcome to the community! I’m a nightly drinker myself, I’ve never experienced withdrawals or anything, but I have heard that benzos are quite helpful when I’m the throughs of alcohol withdrawal. I’d definitely consult someone more knowledgeable for a definite answer though. Where you from?

Hey mate, I have been through this precise situation more times than I can count. I am a recovering alcoholic, I've been through rehab, medicated detox and hospital-supervised detox more times than I can count. I've also done MANY self-medicated detoxes at home. Christmas and the end of the year is always a difficult time for addict, so, no judgement here.

The xans will definitely help (provided that they are REAL alprazolam, and nothing fake, otherwise you might as well flush them down the toilet). And the percs will help as a comfort/self-medicating drug, but no real help with the alcohol withdrawals.

How much have you and your friend been drinking. And real talk here please, no need to dumb it down for us. How many drinks of what kind of booze? How long have you and your friend been drinking this amount? And is it every day? If so, how long have you been drinking every day?
Do you and/or your friend experience any physical withdrawals when you try to stop drinking, and/or if you can't get access to alcohol, e.g. shaky hands, sweating, anxiety, nausea/vomiting, irritability, insomnia, tics, etc?

Unfortunately the 2 of us don’t know how many “drinks” because we don’t really make drinks, we just get cheap large bottles of vodka and the 2 of us can easily go through a liter a day together and not feel very drunk. But some days (especially if the previous night was heavy) we can cut down to maybe 2 white claws or something and just sleep for most of the day. We do get shaky and extremely anxious and get that punch-in-the-chest feeling, but we haven’t been great at cutting down long enough to see how bad it can get. I know that when I went a day and a half, I felt terrible, and I was trying to make it to 3 days but couldn’t, which worries me because it kinda snuck up on me throughout quarantine and everything. We’ve both had panic attacks for years, even before this, and I feel like that’s contributed to this and has become a vicious cycle. I used to be too dependent on my ADHD meds, which is kinda what got me into drinking in the first place because the best way to deal with that comedown and go to sleep was booze, but alcoholism runs in my family and I do enjoy drinking obviously, so the booze stuck around while kicking the stimulant abuse was no big deal. My friend’s family is totally sober (at least on the surface) and he’s having a harder time with the holidays than I am because at least I have a little access when I’m around my dad and have a bit more privacy to buy my own when I’m back home. He’s still managed to get it, but constantly worries about the amount. It’s just a really shitty thing to have to worry about and it’s way too stressful. I don’t plan on going fully sober, but I know everyone says that’s the only way for alcoholics and that really worries me. I mainly want harm reduction for now

Thank you so much! Luckily my house has been a bit less dry than I expected and I’ve had enough privacy to get my own, although it has forced me to cut back which is a good thing. I will have to have surgery soon though which means a few days cold turkey which I haven’t done in about 2 years at least and that worries me, but I’m really hoping I can cut down enough beforehand to be okay with that.

Hope your surgery goes well and if you can cut down you will surely have an easier time when you have to stop for your surgery. Glad your holidays weren't as dry as you thought they were going to be.

And by the way, would you like your thread to stay here in mew member introductions or maybe have it moved to health and recovery. The only reason i ask is this forum doesn't get read much but health and recovery is very busy and other members might be able to give you some tips, pointers, and advice.

It can stay here, no problem. It will be more visible in H and R. Here or there, no matter to me. Totally up to you.
