Hey everyone. I really need some help. I have decided to come off of these nasty pills. SO here is just a little about me and i am hoping for some feedback on what to expect, how long to experience this and some hope. I have been taking oxycodone for about 3.5 years. I know when i started taking them exactly cause it was when i had my little girl. I had her in an elevator, i didn't make it to the hospital in time!! Anyways so while i was in the hospital i was prescribed Percets to help with all my pain until i was released. When i got released i was prescribed though as well. At first i was able to take them as prescribed, but now 3.5 years later i am definitely not able to. I started buying them on the street, then i started getting them from a doctor and i still do.. I get 4, 15 mg a day so (60mg total) for headaches that i have suffered for for almost 15 years. I get my script and i can easily take them in 4-5 days. I also for the past year have been taking 30 milg and have wasted WAY to much money on this type of lifestyle, i buy these on the side to help get me through the month and always say i will just take them as i should but dont i just go through them so fast and then have to keep buying more. For about the last 6 months now when i run out i take subs for a few days till i get my next script, take all those then have to buy a bunch to try to make it for another month. I would say i take up to 100-120 milg a day. And have been for about a solid 6 months. Before that i would say 50-100 milg a day. The worst part now is my husband is taking them too. He as them prescribed cause of his back he gets 6 10 milg (60 milg) a day of oxycodone as well , but he is so ready to be done to. We both run out of out pills within 4-5 days like i said then we both have to buy so many off the streets. we have spent almost 4,000 this month on them. He as only been taking them for about 6 months and i would say about 100-120 milg a day as well... So im sure his withdrawal will be different then mine? So does anyone have any help with any ways to do this on our own, at home. ways to help myself and him get through this and also about how long it general might take? I have read for me, about day 5 is the worst then about day 10 physically i will start to feel better? But i dont know about my husband, being its only been about 6 months. We do have about 3 subutex we were thinking of taking starting tomorrow and just using very little every day and taper off those? or is that a bad idea? PLEASE if anyone out there can help me, (us) i would so appreciate it. I have taken less today than i usually do, only 40 milg my prescribed dose cause we dont have any left and i somewhat can feel my lower back hurting and having weird cramps? Anyways anything helps. thank you!

Hi,
Good for you for wanting to get off the pills. I spent $1000's myself on the 30 mgs then onto heroin for a year after that. Good you are getting out now. I prepared myself as much as possible before I jumped off the opiates. Do you have any withdrawal medications on hand beside the subs? There are a few ways to go about this. For starters here is the The Opioid Withdrawal Megathread and FAQ. The withdrawal will depend on severity of use, amount.. body weight and longevity with a few other factors. You may have a more difficult time than your husband as your brain has been accustomed to the pills much longer than him. Or your whole system rather.

You are on a moderate dose but not massively high. The subs might help a little. I would get some Clonidine as well if you can. Here is the Suboxone/Buprenorphine Mega Thread and FAQ V. 2.0 as well…

Also, cough medicine helped me tremendously but don't take it for too long. And yes, the 4th - 5th day for short acting opiates is indeed the worst ime. But, it passes and in the big picture it IS worth it. You will need support most definitely. Check out Sober living under Recovery Support for starters. Also google The Thomas Recipe! :)

Best to you both

Thank you so much. I am pretty scared. I can't stop yawning, falling asleep and my body hurts so bad and weird cramping. I'm trying to stay positive and stay hydrated . I have read those links u posted as well thank you so much for your reply and hope I'm gonna need it cause I'm also trying to support my husband. And not one other person knows but this place and him. Thank you again. I'm gonna use this as a place to keep me accountable as well.

Hello,

Good for you making this decision. Good luck to you.

Tapering down to a lower dose will help to reduce your withdrawal (wd) symptoms. However, it takes control to lower your dose. You could have a trusted, non-judgmental person help by giving you your (reduced) dose, so your self-control wouldn't be an issue.

If you cannot go this route, then there are a few things that can help with the symptoms of wd.

By the way, with short-acting opiates, I tend to have the worst symptoms on.days 2 & 3 of wd, and start feeling better slowly from there. Everyone is different.

So I'll list some helpful things, but please, before taking any of these, do your research.

Loperamide is helpful. It's Imodium. The generic brand will do. This will help prevent diarrhea. Technically, lope is an opioid, but simply put, dpes not act centrally, so produces no high (though some claim it does). But, it will help the runs. In higher doses it can help combat other wd symptoms. But there are dangers with high doses, and some deaths. Mind you, the doses taken there were MASSIVE.

Potassium Glutamate can help with restless legs. Read up and make sure you don't have any conditions that make PG contraindicated.

Diphenhydramine, or benadryl, can help with the runny nose and sneezing. Note, some people say this makes their restless legs worse. It can also help make you drowsy and maybe sleep a little. Other antihistamines may help as well. Read up. Some are more/less sedating.

Valerian Root can.calm anxiety and make you drowsy. It's not SUPER strong. But many find it effective. Lower doses for anxiety, more for sleep.

Some say DXM cough syrup (dextromethorphan - MAKE SURE THAT'S THE ONLY INGREDIENT,), is helpful. I have used it. I'm not sure what I think. Read up on.it.

Benzos can help with anxiety and make you drowsy. But don't be reckless and trade one problem for another. Use sparingly and taper off and be done quickly.

Stay hydrayed, get enough electrolytes.

Try to eat well.

If I think of anything else I'll add it in.

Good luck to you!!!

You can.do this!!!

Remember...IT WILL PASS. IT WILL. Yiu just gotta wait it out. It can.feel like it will never get better, but it WILL.

Peace.

P.S. look online for a "drug interaction checker" if you're going to take things together. Of course this is no substitute for professional advice but it's helpful. A pharmacist will also answer your questions, you can.call one.
