I'm a "newbie" to this site, having joined to learn more about the success (and lack of) pain medications I've been on for several years. At the moment, I'm in a bit of a quandary, trying and failing to find an effective "break-through" pain med for severe, intractable lumbar back pain.
I'm trying to avoid surgery at all costs, as most are ineffective and can often make the problem worse. Currently, my physician has me on one 50mcg/hr Fentanyl Patch, which I remove and replace with a fresh one every 48 hours.
This regime works fine when I'm not "flaring," but when I do "flare," I'm nearly paralyzed with pain from the waist down.
We've tried a variety of "breakthrough" drugs over the years-from dilaudid to oxycontin to methadone to oxycodone and so on and so forth.
Interestingly, the only med that brings relief is hydrocodone-which I believe is somewhat "weaker" than the afore mentioned drugs.
I'm curious as to why this could be, especially since I've just spent $900.00 on a bottle of Nucynta-100mg, which is doing nothing to ease this current flare.
Does Hydrocodone "bind" with my pain receptors better? I'm curious because A.) it works, and B.) it's inexpensive.
Thanks for any information you can give me.
