After fighting my mental problems my whole life, I finally decided to go to a psychiatrist...

- My work has been suffering (I have no motivation & suck at concentrating and retaining stuff - and I'm squandering a lot of really good money by simply not working)
- My relationships have been suffering (my sleep schedule is random so I end up sleeping through the day and this pisses off friends, family, and significant others)
- I'm pretty depressed in general (feel a lot of shame for being a loser) but I think I might be a bit more bi-polar than simply depressed

I'd been diagnosed with ADHD twice in the past, suicide attempt, diagnosed bi-polar, diagnosed chronic depression. But I never took any of it really seriously until recently.

Anyway, I'm trying to get on the correct med combo.

- I think I need something for work (I'm thinking adderall or something similar - suggestions?)
- Something to get me to sleep at a regular time and get a full night's rest
- Something to balance my mood

So I go to the nurse practitioner today and she sends me home with some Abilify samples (for concentration and bi-polar) and a prescription for trazodone (for sleep).

I was pretty excited until I googled Abilify and saw a billion horrible reviews for it and I couldn't find much (if anything) on it helping with concentration and/or motivation. It just seems like a run-of-the-mill anti-depressant.

And the trazodone seems like a crappy anti-depressant that doubles as a crappy sleep pill.

I was pretty excited when I left the office, but now I'm pretty upset that I just wasted $300 on stuff that won't really help (it might help with my depression which would help with other things, but I was pretty excited about getting something like adderall).

Anyway, I've never really done pills or anything recreationally or even pills that were prescribed to me (had a lot of friends/family get addicted to them...). Thoughts on my first psychiatric experience? Do the prescriptions seem legit or did she screw me?

I'm going to give it a chance, but I'm worried and want to be knowledgeable for my next appointment.

Thanks guys, I'll keep you posted on my progress.

[Meta] If this is the wrong place to post this, could someone move it or tell me where to move it?

I have been diagnosed as bi-polar with major depressive disorder. We have a lot of the same problems! I take Cymbalta (I also have fibromyalgia) and lamictal as mood stabilizers, I also take trazodone to help me sleep like a normal person (doesn't help). I wouldn't recommend this but I take 2 over the counter sleeping pills with the trazodone at 10 pm, then I take 4 OTC sleep aids at 12 am and another 2 at 2am. then I usually finally fall asleep for about 4 hours, then I take another two and usually sleep another 2 hours. I have a very high tolerance to most meds and I know my limits, but I don't know yours! So please talk to your psych doc about your erratic sleep patterns and maybe he will give you a sleep aid.

I don't think I could handle more than one or two OTC sleeping pills without feeling really groggy the next morning, but if the trazodone doesn't help I'll check with my psych and see if it might be a good solution.

Have you ever had problems with attention or motivation? If so, are your meds working well for you?

Most drugs will have horrible reviews on the internet. You should try it and decide for yourself. Also, we can't tell you what to take.

IMO the only way you're gonna find the correct med combo is by trial and error.

Many doctors consider making money their top priority, if you're not happy with your current doctor simply go to another one.

Good luck :)

Hey! I have similar issues. Bipolar, panic disorder, ADHD. I have yet to find the right mood stabilizer. In my opinion, its a trial and error game with medications. I would give the meds a try, if they don't work there is always other options. I've been on celexa, pristiq, paxil, risperdal, lithium, lamictal, seroquel, remeron, and abilify. So far, vyvanse for the ADHD and clonazapam for the panic attacks/anxiety have worked. Just don't give up! Give the meds a try and always be open and honest with your doctor. Good luck!

Tegretol works great for me as a mood stabilizer with immediate results, you don't have to wait "X amount of time" for it to work. I've been on a child size dose for a very long time and it hasn't lost it's luster (for me) yet. I take the chewables because I can't swallow pills larger than a big spec of dust. ;)
