heroin users out there...

I dunno, the thing is, people hold an invidious distinction when it comes to 'addiction'. I mean, no one can debate that in the majority of people, the very word is associated with non desireable, hopeless, depraved things.
And the thing that bothers me is that it's not like there's only one type of addict. I mean, it's not exactly the same, but it's similar to saying that all black or white or anybody of a particular race is the same as another person of that race. Of course there are stereotypical similarities that are rooted in truth, but different people are different people. Different addictions stem from different places. And different people will deal with addiction differently.
Okay, I've never shot heroin. I've snorted it on a few occasions. I have relatively little experience with opiates. Downers. So, I know little of physical addiction...
But...it's been said that I've had a slight coke problem. This, is true. But here's the thing...
I went into my past daily habit using it as a tool. A guarentee that I will wake up and feel motivated enough to go to work. And just generally keep me going. And do the things that I needed to do. Drive my life forward. Sort of silencing any sort of lazy complaint that might arise in my head to thwart action, movement. So, okay. And it worked. I used it as a tool.
"self medicating"...whatever. But the thing is that self medication is basically the complete opposite of self-destruction. It presupposes that you want to help yourself. So...
Yeah, it was a bit of an addiction...but I'm pretty driven about the things that are important in my life. And I was completely happy with the addiction. The groove that it provided, so that I could do the things that I needed to do.
But, I found out, that with stimulants, one burns out. So, as much as it started as what it started as, it ended as something completely different.
...sometimes it's hard to tell the wishing from the well, where I threw the penny and where it fell...
As PhreeX said...
The thing is, people are going to lose control when they use drugs - but this is the bitch - they will lose control regardless of the drug
And, you know, of course...these things play with things so primal within a person's body. With drugs, and especially with needles, we are given so much control. Too much sometimes. And we're only human, so...
I admit, shooting coke didn't fit into this 'driven', self-medicating plan as much as curiosity and my passion to feel as much as I can in as many different states as I can. You know, I guess 'I fancy myself a writer'. And I did have these things that I was going to write about but it would never really be genuine if I really didn't know. You know? Plus, I'm just obsessed with the physicality of it all. I mean, the distended vien, the pungent smell of the cold alcohol swipe...okay, I'm gonna stop. Something about it speaks to me. And I don't regret it at all.
anyway, we are only human. Addiction's gonna happen. So if you're into yours and are comfortable with maintaining it (and can maintain it) in your life, I don't see why any one should give you shit. Moreover, why it's bad. I mean, there's theory and then there's your actual life.
You just hafta know what's important to you.

Okay, after reading this topic again, and mearly reading the title of the thread again...
I feel strongly about the things that I've written, but I want you guys to keep in mind that I'm coming from a place of psychological cocaine addiction. Therefore, the things I say about addiction in general is not personally influenced by opiate addiction (physical addiction).
I wrote this a while ago...
"One could get away with saying that. One could get away with the term, "cocaine addiction". One could get away with that.
But the "cocaine addict" taken as an animal indigenous to urban areas, college institutions, and business men's pockets, is by nature much more depraved and insecure and pathetic than the heroin addict. After injecting a gram of cocaine, and having none the next day, one does not sit in pain, vomiting, aching, crying and feeling, you know…
One goes to class and such. And comes home and goes to bed. And forgets and dismisses...and sleeps.
