there is an article on the front page of the houston chronicle today about opium production in afghanistan. knowing very little about the subject myself, i will report what it says, and allow you to form your own opinions:
afghanistan has an annual opium crop of around $90 million, or about 3,700 metric tons in the year 2000. more than a ton of this was consumed in the US alone. since the taliban has taken control, they have taxed and otherwised skimmed from this amount somewhere in the range of 15-27 million. on the surface the taliban claims to oppose heroin production, but in relaity this is simply not the case. their pledge, and accomplishment, in 2000 of an almost total halt in the growth of poppies may have seem honorable at the time, but it was more a matter of economics then morals. the truth was that the market had been glutted, and the taliban was suspending production to raise the prices of their existing surpluses. heroin exportation did not decrease in 2000, and the importation of chemicals used to produce heroin continued in afghanistan unabated. since september 11, the taliban has threatened to legalize the growth of opium and production of heroin, but this is in effect what they have been doing all along. the article also claims that heroin prices in the US have declined by as much as 50% since the 11th. no one is exactly sure why this is, perhaps dealers are trying to unload their supplies in anticipation of hard times to come. perhaps the taliban is encouraging sales in order to raise funds, for obvious reasons. or perhaps the market is about to explode with unregulated production. the US claims that the war on terrorism may easily and necessarily be extended into a war on heroin production as well, in order to limit the taliban's funds, and to continue to be the anti-drug pricks the US have always been.
that was the gist of it, interpret it as you will. one thing seems ceratin to me though, times they are a changin'!

A very good point was made -
These towel heads may make some good smack, but their not exactly armed with the greatest stuff - things like tanks that don't run, guns that should have been overhauled years ago, etc... so it would make sense that if you have a lot of heroin, but need weppons, you sell the heroin so you can arm yourself - given that time is NOT on their side, they might be selling off their surplus of heroin and raw opium so they can fund their war ... thoughts?

It has been stated more than one time since the attacks that if the war on drugs was ended that terrorism would also end. They can't do anything without money and we are giving them a lot of what they spend because we buy their drugs.
I know that this seems like a broad and simplistic statement, but I believe that it has some merit. Evil is funded by underworld activities and as long as they are all sneaking around with mass amounts of money to spend none of us are safe.

Our government has been working hard on this soloution for a while, and withing the last couple of years have created a very powerful, synthetic alternitive to herione, which would idealy put the afgahns out in the long run. Methadone (method ONE) was there attempt back in the 60's, take heroine addicts and convert them to methadone addicts, after all it is more addictive and has far worse withdrawal. That way, the government could control the heroine addicts. But, method one didn't work. The heroine addicts preferred injecting heroine to these nice white pills, and, began to sell them to buy real heroine. With several intermediate attempts, such as Dilaudid, demonstrating only moderate success ,employ method 2: Oxycontin. More discreetly marketed as a 'painkiller', but easily available thru crooked doctors and patients. Available in dosages so high even opiod tolerant people would like. Thru my experiences and hearing those of other users, oxy is far more practical, and perhaps even enjoyable then heroine. Easy to snort, or possible inject, legal to obtain. And, no quinine cuts! Our very own government is in on the opiate game, gaining a large share of the market. Those Blue Babies are so damn enticing! mmmmmmm. But, Uncle Sam cant fool me! HAHA! Ive foiled the plot! Hidden truths are revealed with earth-shattering consequences, resulting in great terrorist acts, untold suffering! The End Is Near!

ahh conspiracy...we americans thrive on it. indeed, our counrty was practically founded on the principle ("damn brits, scheming to take all our profits and keep us out of parlimant!") but how much of the theory do i buy into today? my belief is that attemps by the government, both past and future, to corner the opiate market in this country are motivated by many things. obviously the government prefers drugs that it can regulate and tax. heroin is an easy target because it is so obviously funded by and supporting our mortal enemies. sure it's not pleasant to think that every time one of us scores, we're effectively buying osama another illegal television set, but it's the truth. and while i would like to think the health concerns of america's citizens were also a considerbale factor, i am constantly reminded that the two deadliest drugs in this country (need i say? alcohol and tobacco) are embraced by our government. attempts to wean "junkies" of their life's blood are simultaneously efforts to have them suckling at uncle sam's perscription teet. don't kick the opiates completely, sir, our dealers are reliable, honest, and legal! we'll even set you up with a payment plan. and though the prospect of a supplier who would have you jailed for disloyalty seems at first laughable, one need not look far. big brother is watching, and he just scored some kick ass shit.

And they now estimate the total cost for the 9-11 attacks at about $500,000 - thats not much ...
I agree, end the war on drugs and we would dismantle MANY of this worlds criminal organizations....
