Search the web for "long term chronic pain management" or "narcotic therapy" - there are only a few risks that can come from long-term use of narcotics, to be fair, I will go over each..
1) Respiratory infections - narcotics depress your breathing, so you cycle less air through yer lungs, when you sleep, it's further depressed, as a reasult the stagnant air can cause bacterial problems - still, this is a minor risk and can easily be treated with medications..
2) The method of administration will cause damage - if you eat pain killers all day then you can cause damage to yer liver - the fix is to eat pain killers that don't have the bad shit like APAP in them.. of course smoking heroin isn't that great, nor is snorting - luckily IV injection can be made safe if you alternate sites to the point you're giving yer viens time to recover..
Anyone remember the Miami doctor who was busted - for almost 40 years he was taking several hundred mg's of morphine per day, then some pharmacist got him busted.. he didn't fight it but retired with his millions then wrote a number of articles on long-term opiate use, many were posted to the chronic pain forums at U-Mass.. he had some REALLY good info about how we really have NO IDEA what effects these SSRI drugs will have on us in 15 or 20 years, and that we are fucking with a delicate system... but opiates have a long track record of being safe - the only problem is that one must have a steady supply, which will never be kosher in this world.. I will try to find the article about his bust...
My anesthesiologist even agrees - I have some legit back problems, so after going through the NSAID's and muscle relaxers, and only finding relief with narcotics - I then had a choice, they could do a lumbar nerve block, which could mean I would have a pain free life, or I could do physical therapy as well as start on a long-term narcotics therapy program - he said the choice was mine, but that without a doubt the narcotics therapy would be the LEAST INVASIVE route, whom HE favored as well.. really cool guy, fresh from med school so he doesnt have these ass-backwards views about narcotics being evil, addictive killers...

I am still currious to know where I said heroin was *NOT* adicitve - see, personally I don't really believe in the concept of one drug being more *addictive* then another, because addiction is a product of the user - I think that heroin is simply a more powerfull drug that offers greater pleasure.. in turn, many will fall ..
