Here is why I DIS-respect Deadmau5

IMO Bassnectar and Deadmau5 are on two different sides of the spectrum.

What happened to DJs mixing their own productions on two turntables?

In what sense are they on different sides of the spectrum?

I saw Boys Noize a few days ago and while he wasn't playing vinyl he was definitely DJing live.

^^ I don't think he does it "right" persay. He's taking two records and beatmatching them making a set. Its the traditional method minus the vinyl.

I disagree with Deadmaus. Paul Van Dyk has gotten pretty far out into PA/production act territory. Infected Mushroom as a live PA. Hawtin with Traktor. You can always push the limits. Prodigy must have been mentioned. Let's have a dancer in our group.

Its like he's trolling because his whole thing is a gimmic. He wears a mouse hat while he expert knob twiddles. Fuck most producers don't need anything. Its just some random dude or guys making stuff in their basement studio under the alias of the day, solarblow vs munchkin or whatever.

deadmaus always seems like hes full of shit.

It is a pretty useless term meaning "public address". It is usually supposed to indicate the speakers that are facing the audience.

I think alot of artists are doing 'liveshows' because they can't dj.

My brother listens to that shit music. Good god it's annoying. I feel like an old fart saying music these days sucks, but it really does! I'm only 25 :/

I guess it’s kind of sad that he himself has never seen a real DJ spin then. Someone like Carl Cox or DJ Hype is definitely not just “hitting play”. Or maybe he is just upset that he himself can’t juggle 3 records flawlessly while beautifully cutting and scratching =/

Anyhow, he probably just has his software automix his tracks so I’m sure he is just “hitting play”. Just because he chooses to use software that allows him to just “hit play” doesn’t mean there aren’t many real DJ’s out there still keeping it real and doing it the old fashioned way.

I couldnt figure out if you guys were trolling or what....lol

PA - production act. Not to be confused with a PA or public address system. Its when producers bring the studio gear on the road and play live. The complete opposite of pushing play. Watch youtube videos of infected mushroom.

I don't think anyone was lumping DJs in with the "hit play" performers. Also, nobody is downplaying the creativity and hard work it takes to make a studio track worth playing live.

However, when all you're basically doing is hitting the space bar on a laptop and rocking out to your own music, one starts to wonder what exactly the stage presence is really all about.

Don't get me wrong, I live and breathe studio creations and I realize that the art of recreating the same sound live is a circus act at best, but at what point are we honest with ourselves and say that we're really just here to play music we created, through really loud speakers to gauge the crowd's reaction? It's a bit of a wankfest.

Personally, I'd like to see artists combine their music with a little bit of live theater. It gives the artist a way to further contextualize their music. No dialogue needed, but if we're already facing a stage, we might as well have a reason to be facing in that direction.

I keep hoping to wake up to news that this guy got crushed pinching cheese from a human-scale mousetrap.

^^ lol

here is what i wrote on my FB after linking to the two articles

"I feel like I should weigh in here. 1) Despite what Deadmau5 says, beatmatching is a skill, and to some degree, one that cannot always be learned. It is much more than counting to 4...it is making sure the beats are together, the beats aren't competing. Also, even counting to 4 isnt enough...even if the beats are MIDI controlled to the same tempo and landing at the same time, song structure dictates most loops are in 32s and 64s...hard to count, so a 'feel' is important. 2) Turntables vs programs....I have used both. what is most important is how you use the tools you are given. Personally, I am biased away from Abelton, since it is too easy to pre-plan your set...what sounds good at your house may sound completely different on a real system, and what you might be wanting to play might not be what the crowd wants...as a DJ, you are there for them, not for yourself. But if you can effectively use loops and stems from all sorts of different songs to remix live, all the better. 3) Just saying it again, your style is why you get booked. Show it. People will hate, they always do. I am guilty of this. But as long as you are using your tools proficiently, really why would you give a fuck."

He ABSOLUTELY dj's live. Almost everyone else I've seen just hits play it seems. Boys Noize you know he's doing all that he can do make it as "live" as possible.

I agree, I think his music sounds flat, no UPS or downs sounds like using reazon at home....nothing like Armin Van Buuren or Tiesto...

I mostly disrespect Deadmau5 as a person (boy needs some shrooms in his life) but I very much enjoy his music. I like the comment that he is a gateway artist because he's exactly that for someone making the transition from borderline EDM/prog. house to IDM or another genre which I am in the process of myself. Despite what some may, his earlier music is definitely in better taste than what he produces now, but realize he's making music that "sells" and not what he necessarily wants to make anymore. He's admitted as much before. I am a fan of Oldmau5 but not so much Newmau5. I suggest that you turn back the clock and listen to some of his music pre-2009. Also Random Album Title is one of my favorite electronic albums, however he's become repetitive and unoriginal since. If he had stopped producing music then, we would all have been that much better for it.
