Help with San Pedro I Have Been Growing

Hey folks...

Ive been growing this San Pedro for roughly 3 years now and it's 14.5 inches tall with a diameter of about 8 inches. I've read alot of conflicting information on all of these points, so clarification would be great! :)

I plan on eating it soon....

1) I want to leave some at the base so it continues to grow. How much would you recommend to leave? An Inch?

2) I have been deliberately starving it of water to increase mescaline content as I have read various reports stating this to be condusive to higher mescaline content. Now I am reading that this is false. Does anyone know for sure?

3) I know theres no way to know how potent it is, but i dont have any experience with eating a freshly chopped cactus, so generally, would you say that a 12/13 (if I leave an inch or two to continue to grow) inch chunk of San Pedro is going to be enough/too much/too little?

I was planning on basically leaving 2 inches and chopping up/de-spining 12 inches of it, boiling on a low boil in some water for 3 hours or so.

Advice?

Thank you :) Much appreciated as I have grown fond of the little guy, but dont want to waste his potential.

I don't know the answers to your questions but that's a very young plant, I've been growing mine for about 8 years. I would be tempted to be show some more patience. One of them recently fell over under it's own weight, it was so tall. How the hell do you have a diameter of 8 inches on a 14.5 inch tall cactus? Especially in Scotland! Do you mean circumference or are you growing it under artificial light and practising some kind of green fingered black magic? That six-footer I just described is about four inches diameter at the base and on average three inches diameter.

I dont like the idea of starving them of water for too long. I think the MOSTLY it just decreases volume, so its concentrated, like if you dehydrated a carrot it would have more calories per ounce....I dont think its the best way to kick in the plants defenses. I think scratching the skin is more effective.

Also, water is required to pull nutrients from the soil. Less water = less growth. Dont starve until you are ready to harvest.

I bought it when it was already a couple years old, man.

Sorry, it's 3 inches in diameter.

I dont really see why I should wait longer if it's already 14 inches which is a decent dose, as far as I can tell?

Aye I studied forestry/botany/ecology and worked as a professional horticulturalist for 2 years, gardener for 1 year. I dont know what relevance that has, I just wanted to sound important :)

Only reason I suggested being patient is that I have been very patient and it annoyed me to read about you eating a little baby cactus! There was no logic to my outrage ;)

Except this: you can grow a new cactus from any other bit cactus, as long as it's reasonably big (I don't know how big but I reckon two or three inches). I've had my windfall sitting in a darkish room for a couple of months waiting to get round to doing something with it. It's been lying horizontally and has sprouted new growth on the top side. I'd say there is huge cloning potential.

So let's say you wait till you have a cactus a bit taller than two feet. You could eat one foot and chop the remainder into two or three inch segments and turn them into four to six new plants, plus the stump of the mother plant will produce new growth. Wait another few years and you have five to seven healthy doses rather than one.

Hehehe thats cool, and yeah man, you are totally right. If I was going to still be here in 1 years time, or however long, I would keep it, but the fact of the matter is i'm going to be travelling in a few months time, so can't really haul a cactus about it my bag! So its gonna have to get eaten soon, y'know?

I hope you didn't grow this cactus so that you could trip on mescaline, and rather because you enjoy growing cactus and have decided to eat it just because. You can purchase whole and cuts of san pedro legally.

Edt - you're in Scotland, so i could be wrong. But i wouldn't be surprised if its still legal there, if it is in America.

I am aware that you can buy legal San Pedro chips and whatnot, but I just chose to cultivate my own to add a special factor to the trip, to grow a bond with the cactus, bless it myself and utilize it to its maximum potential.

There is also, for me, the element of self-sufficiency and knowing where it came from.

You can also inject it with L-Dopa and greatly increase the mescaline content....wait a few months for it to convert.

That sounds pretty awesome actually. %)

Very interesting information, thanks for sharing that.
